Clitheroe to Shap Freight Workings 1977

Dear all,

Browsing an old conditional WTT for the North-West, I noticed a working from Clitheroe to Shap and return empties (sorry the headcode is not to hand at the moment).

Both paths were booked WFO, and it shown as COY (company train, block working).

Any ideas on what the traffic would have been? And if so, what was the traction, if other than 25s or 40s?

Noting that the loaded run is from Clitheroe, the only source I can imagine would be the cement works. But cement to Shap? Something to do with the M6 perhaps (though the section through Shap was open by 1970).

Any details offered would be greatly appreciated

Other way round? Limestone from Shap quarries to the cement works?

Just a thought - this wasn't traffic to the Shap Cement works is it?

I did consider that, but I am sure that the WTT says the return working was empties.

When I get home, I'll check this point and get the headcodes too

OK, I've checked the details.

6P29 MWFO 1035 x Clitheroe, booked arrival at Shap Summit 1440.

6P36 MWFO 1620 x Shap arrive Clitheroe 1902.

The train is shown as vacuum braked and as mentioned above, is a block working. No other conditional paths for similar workings are shown. I don't yet have access to the mandatory freight workings for the period so cannot see if any of these shed any light.

This could be a possibility, but seeing as the inward working is loaded, other than coal, I can't see what it might be?

Just looked in my very old Baker atlas (1980), which shows multiple freight sites at Shap:
Ribblesdale Cement (symbol "cement works or terminal")
BSC Hardendale Quarry (symbol "quarry)
Harrison's Limeworks (symbol "quarry)

So as Clitheroe was at that time "Horrocksford - Ribblesdale Cement Works", it does look like a cement terminal at Shap for the same company.

That would seem to fit in with how the workings are displayed in the WTT.
