Is there any class of diesel or steam loco you thing should have an example on main line but doesn't?
p.s it has to be a saved one, no class not saved included.

Personally speaking I'd like to see a 58 on the mainline and also a Sulzer powered type 2 variant would be nice. Other than that, it would be nice to see one of the multitude of successful 0-6-0 tender steam loco designs built over the decades, just to see what a mid-sized loco on moderate loadings could do.

I'm guessing it means don't pick something that are all gone and forgotten, as opposed to something with at least one preserved example.

That can't properly go on the mainline though can it. It isn't TPWS fitted and could do a Type 2 resurrection tour down to Aberystwyth or something else similar. Too bad, as WCRC could probably use them very well in top n tail form on those trips they do in on the northern lines of Scotland, they could do a job I'm sure.

I would like to see a 9F on the mainline. Assuming there aren't any already, I don't think there are any due to a problem with the flange-less centre driving wheel.

The Whitby branch is mainline, whether you want to admit it or not. It's still NR controlled infrastructure. Ask the Northern drivers how they feel about driving down there.

7628 is TPWS fitted, which it requires for Whitby - Battersby. It lacks OTMR, which it would need to venture further afield. 7 Mk 1's to Battersby is a pretty good work out for a little type 2, so definitely worth a look if you like the things. OTMR would cost several tens of thousands of pounds, so if you would like to stump up the cost.....

9F's - The issue is most definitely flangeless centre driving wheels. They are much wider than conventional wheelsets, and the concern is them hitting modern raised check rails, and some forms of high speed crossing nose. However, enquiries are evidently going to be made re 92214 & Whitby after its next overhaul, so there is some hope.

not questioning you, but what do you mean ask northern drivers how they feel driving down there?

I agree with sprinterguy on the Roarers and the APT, and might possibly add 41001 from the National Collection, just to hear a Valenta again.
From steam days, I'd especially like to see the C1 Atlantic, and perhaps Lode Star, both of which are of an age with City of Truro, and easily capable of 60 mph with a decent load.
Would a Warship count?

Beyond that, I wouldn't mind seeing an unrebuilt Merchant Navy. There are plenty of them in preservation, and you could start with an unrestored or half-restored example. It could be cosmetic (put an air-smoothed casing on a rebuild) or full "unrebuilding" with chain-driven valve gear.

You'll have a job to do that! The small matter of Walcherts valve gear on all cylinders! Wouldn't look quite right somehow. ;)

Unrebuilding a MN is a can of worms. Don't forget that one of the main reasons behind the modifications was a catastrophic crank axle failure, and flaws were found in several of the rest of the class.

Isn't the ACLG looking to get at least one of it's roarers mainline certified? They do seem to want to go beyond a stuffed and mounted collection, and sadly with electrics that's all you'll have unless they are mainline.

Anyway, along with the above (and the 89), I'd love a mainline CIG, CEP and VEP (and stuff the stupid regulations relating to Mk1s).

There's been plenty of experience resolving problems in preservation that couldn't be fixed in service. I'd imagine that experience with their smaller cousins would probably allow whoever did the work to correct the problems. Modern laser aligning gear would be a great improvement on the visual checks from the 1940s, or even the optical system they used at Swindon (not sure whether it spread to Eastleigh under BR). I'd keep the boiler pressure down to 250 lbs rather than 280, and be a lot more careful with the regulator valve design. Still, whatever they do, it would be worth it to see something which I've never seen, an original condition MN at speed on the South Western.
