After seeing 93007 and 93010 for the first time passing down my local railway a few weeks back. What step forward will these engines bring to the table. I hardly understand rail freight as it stands already. And it sounds to me like we have a well established 37 66 67 68 69 and 70 and 88 fleets. So what changes are going to be established by the introduction of new rail freight traction?

Furthermore what's your opinion on the new stock. I quite like what overseas rail companies are bringing to the table with the new stock. My personal favourite being the northern 197 as I think its just well put together for the commuter. Its comfortable its sleek. But still I dont know rail freight so I cant really form an opinion on them

The Class 93 are essentially a derivative of the Class 88 but with a larger diesel engine and some batteries. This format allows them to be used in a very similar fashion to the 88s, allowing them to shunt wagons or coaches into non-electrified sidings etc. which are just off the mainline or similar. The newly arrived Class 99 are a more powerful version of the 88s and 93s with 2 more axles (being Co-Co rather than Bo-Bo) and a significantly larger diesel engine allowing 99s to either run as an electric under the wires or as a diesel elsewhere without any significant disadvantage in either mode.

Pretty much everything has been discussed in this thread.

It might take a while to look through but it’s probably not worth repeating everything in a new thread at this point.
