Yeah that didn't go so well did it. Perhaps the need to broaden the horizon and go direct to a customer, similar to what Varamis Rail are doing but one could imagine any profits will be razor thin.

But that's a topic for another thread...

Know it's off-thread, but what happened with Orion, and what's happened to the units (was it 326001, 768001, 768002?) - are they stored, withdrawn, gone for scrap etc. If you could point me to some info please, that'd be great - many thanks

I remember users on here effectively saying ROG's order was a pipedream yet here it is in the flesh.
There’s still huge questions over how they will make them pay. Currently they have 5 or 6 locos for use on traffic that will never justify brand new locos and have been conspicuously unsuccessful in adding new work (Orion has not succeeded). The cost of 10 new locos is not cheap…

They'd be mad to not have spoken to customers and worked something out though, the costs here are many magnitudes greater than for a couple of 769s and nearly scrap value 319s.

Maybe @Bletchleyite would hire them to bank the 66 hauled freights over Shap :D

Nonetheless, ROG's owners do seem to have pretty deep pockets...

Wouldn't surprise me if they were planning to hire them out to FOCs, GBRF would probably take a few to get drivers trained up and speed up introduction of 99s.

Unlikely as whilst there maybe similarities between the UK Stadler locos they can also be vastly different as well.

Well, they are being built, so if ROG can't find work for them they will undoubtedly end up with other operators.

One option is the First haulage contract for TPE Mk5A and Night Riviera, for example

Are they actually building the projected thirty, or are 011-030 options ?

Whilst the 93 will not be anything like as powerful as a GBRf 99, it will still be a very competent AC loco which will still run on non electrified routes - just not with big heavy freight trains.

GBRf do seem to be power hungry - evidenced by the announcement they are taking on the five ex DRS 57/3s. Perhaps if ROG cannot find enough work for them, some of the 93s could be leased to GBRf ? As an example, would a 93 be able to lift an intermodal train out of Gateway and underthe wires to continue on AC ?

The engines in the 93s aren't powerful enough for these services. Total power output off the wires is 1740hp vs 2800hp for the 57s (minus 601) and 3800hp for the 68s. That's less than a 185. They'll be perfect for ROG's bread & butter services of stock moves and can also allow them to potentially expand into freight services.

In operational terms, yes. In financial terms they’ll be catastrophic.
This is why the scepticism about ROG’s future pipeline continues, even with the locos now being revealed.

You don't need 3800hp for a five coach train. Heck, even a Class 31 could manage that! :D

A 93 with 1740hp would do just fine, even over the hills.

The power-to-weight ratio of 93+5 Mk5s (away from the OHLE) is around half or less than a 185 or 802, so basically not much use in terms of matching existing timings, and the ETS load would knock that back even more.

I know ROG keep talking up a moving into freight haulage, but that's a fiercely competitive business and I suspect the 93's are going to be the some of the most expensive locos to lease in the UK.

Yes, some customers are doubtless willing to pay a 'green' premium to some extent, but DB, FL, DRS and GBRf already operate at least some electric locos (and GBRf has a very capable bi-mode on order) so ROG are far from being the first in the 'green freight haulage' market...

It's not far by the looks of things- would be a sensible little bit of infill but I would imagine that with a fully charged battery it wouldn't cause too much issue. Being a short distance it would probably only require diesel on the uphill direction too!

I get the impression that making routes like that workable is kind of the point of the 93. The 88 can do shunting etc around a yard but not much else on diesel, the 93 allows for some small actual moves.

Remember that the starting tractive effort on diesel is the same as on electric.

There are tractive effort versus speed curves for a 93 on OHLE and diesel+battery, plus a 37 and 66 for comparison, here - https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/class-93-tri-mode-loco.210779/post-5118414

Basically at low speeds (up to around 15mph) a 93 has more tractive effort than a 37 and around 3/4 of the tractive effort of a 66. So if a 37 could haul the train up the ramp then a 93 (or 88 probably) should be able to.

The reason the 93 has roughly 3/4 of the low-speed tractive effort of a 66 with only 2/3 of the (powered) axles is because it has better wheelslip control (due to having modern AC-traction motor drives, versus older DC-drives in the 66).

I noticed a couple of articles on the Class 93 which give more technical information:

These each have a 40kWh capacity with a peak power of 200kW. Thus, whilst the train is accelerating, the Class 93 will have a peak power of 1,300kW for up to ten minutes, which is almost twice that of a Class 88 in diesel mode.
I've not seen the battery capacity before. If my maths is correct, 80kWh is the kinetic energy of a 1000-tonne train moving at 55mph, so they've sized the battery to adsorb the energy of a moving train using regenerative braking only.

The battery packs provide 400 kW extra power to supplement the engine when the locomotives are running in diesel/battery hybrid mode. The batteries modules can also work alone, enabling carbon-free operations.
Previous reports have said that the 93 would only have two modes of operation: electric or combined diesel/battery.

The batteries are replacing the resistor grids that are (traditionally) used for electric braking when returning power to the OLE isn’t an option (like, if it’s not on the OLE!)

AIUI they are roughly the same weight as the resistor grids, and take less space. So it is a way of recovering decent amounts of energy, which helps fuel efficiency, particularly when starting heavy trains at low speed.

That's my understanding too. But I do wonder how that will work out in practice. Would the batteries be limited in the rate at which they could be recharged? And would that be fast enough to absorb all the energy of a 1000T or 2000T trailing load when confronted with an unexpected yellow aspect at linespeed?

EDIT: and the regenerative braking should help fuel efficiency away from the wires, which will cut operating costs. Does anyone know how much of a FOCs operating costs are spent on diesel?

Apologies I've not always followed this large thread, but when talking about where 93s can work, wasn't an/the original plan to replace some 37s still in service?
