For those stating that the MkIVs are knackered, can you please explain in more detail? They are 10 years younger than MkIII after all, shouldn't they be good for another 10?

IMO We should have ordered a UK gauge Railjet along with suitable electric traction (TRAXX) and diesel locos for beyond Edinburgh.
If you were ordering UK RailJet sets, you'd want a UK Vectron. Far superior to Bombardier's effort!

Surely such powerful locos would be well suited to freight operations in the future? That's what happened to the 86s after all. Grand Union Trains' website still seems to mention using them between Cardiff and Paddington (at least initially) which I'm praying with all my heart to be true. I'd never touch a GWR 800/802 again if it actually happened! Outside of open access operations, long term they'll unfortunately either be scrapped, or sent to Europe. At best they'll work freight trains and have a similar lifespan to the 86s.

This is the beauty of a joined up rail system (if we had one). The locos could be shared for all types on traffic on non OHLE lines, think of a diesel CO-CO Class 90, just as much at home with pax as freight.

Haven't Grand Union proposed a Stirling - Euston service using 225s? That's what I'll be using if it goes ahead!

I wasn't sure what stock the Stirling to Euston service was gonna use. I'd love to see them on those services as well! If anything for the novelty of seeing them on the WCML. It would be the modern day equivalent of seeing A4s or deltics on the West Coast.
