Rumor has it 87002 has managed to land up stuck in polmardie due to setting on fire to some deggree and has failed to return to do the second leg of the tour.
All of the lucky passengers have been shoved onto a local service to motherwell and there is a chance the saviour of the day 57601 may continue the tour for the failed seven.
Honestly I fail to see how this could of happened.
Oh yes I understand this can always happen but seen as though this was the sorry to all those last time tour they could have sorted out a bit more insurance.
But I could be wrong.

Yes, according to guys on Scot-Rail, it went in to Polmadie at about 1900 (?) and 57601 is now on the tour.

Although I disagree with your comment about the failure. 87002 has been running fine, and obviously they've been apologising for this, but it was a freak accident. Flashovers happen on a more frequent basis on the old AC electrics now, considering they are 30-40 years old. They couldn't have done anything about it.

Not Rumour, it's happened!

due to setting on fire to some deggree and has failed to return to do the second leg of the tour.

Battery charger module fault or summmat according to Mr 37402 on the train, but NOT caught fire!

All of the lucky passengers have been shoved onto a local service to motherwell and there is a chance the saviour of the day 57601 may continue the tour for the failed seven.

Correct, 57601 at the helm ona revised schdule and loosing time! Wonder what time of the morning they will be back at Intl?!

Honestly I fail to see how this could of happened.
Oh yes I understand this can always happen but seen as though this was the sorry to all those last time tour they could have sorted out a bit more insurance.

It's a heritage loco, these things fail, it can't be helped. There was insurance, the 57 was on the rear and is now taking the train forward. It's not as if they could just get another 87 as 002 is currently the only one passed to run on NR under its own power.

Hmmm thought the title was fine seen as though there is only one of them.
But anyway of course im not silly enough to think another seven could be pulled out the bag but the problem is that yes she has been tested and yes has worked a few trains.
But you still have no idea what a fully loaded consist will do to a loco.
Of course no one could have foreseen this but maybe in future more rigorous testing could be carried out.
And as for lesandres comment yes locos do flashover but not 3 months after a being overhauled and being near mainline condition before this.

It's been up and down the WCML on mail units and hauled that Cargo-D set on a test run. Anyway by the sounds of it the problem was with a battery charger while on depot so I doubt it would have been anything to do with the load, maybe just a faulty charger. But, like everyone else who has posted so far i don't know exactly so why speculate, all we know is its burst and Ronnie is on the front!

You can put a loco through a whole year's worth of testing and it can still fail on its first tour. Testing does not go to say that a loco is not going to fail, testing is just to satisfy the owning group, Network Rail and the VAB that the loco is capeable of running on the mainline and keeping to schedule without any major problems, it also allows the group to iron out any teething problems, which is what the ACLG have done.
And as for lesandres comment yes locos do flashover but not 3 months after a being overhauled and being near mainline condition before this.
Why not? :?
A loco can flash over at any point in their lives, even a brand new loco can flashover on its first outing if there are faults with the loco or driver incompetance. I'm not saying either of these caused 87002's failure, as it has been stated by 37412 what the problem was and it wasn't a flashover.

And finally, let's see you working on a loco before you start complaining about how one's maintained/operated ;)

I knew you would pull that one out on me nice touch :D
But yes I know nothing about Ac's and please do point out my short comings but I am trying to learn slowly but basically isn't their a solution to this problem like a form of testing a loco to a point when rather than fault finding we start fault predicting.
A half baked far fetched idea but this is what spending 2 days straight without sleep doing geology does to you.

A farce is what happened last year when this tour was supposed to run, ;)

I wouldn't have called this situation a farce, unlucky !!! yes !!!

But the fact it's happened second time around says differently.
Yes not a farce this time but overall the whole situation is a farce.

Complete and utter jibber (along with the rest of your comments on this subject!) <(

These things happen unfortunately and can't be forseen. Just one of those things...

And yes, we arrived back at Intl somewhere in the region of 0100 today.

Very true, Connex SouthEastern's first class 375 when it arrived in 1999 wasn't in service until 2001 - 2 years of testing / training! And it failed on its first day, something the media frothed about to the point where they all of a sudden became anti-railway again

I heard it was a battery charger fault which melted a battery and caused somke, which led to some people thinking it had caught fire.

It took load 14 (roughly) past me perfectly fine, one of the most impressive things I have seen for a while. It was doing that for years and years before it was taken out of service. It will carry on doing it aslong as it's on the mainline.

I just feel for the dissapointed people onboard who have spent hard earned cash on this 87 tour.
Not returning with the expected traction they wanted and getting home late.

I wouldn't be.

I purchased a ticket knowing that the locomotive/s could fail at anytime, I know that sort of thing happens from time to time. If I had to go back home with a 57 on the front instead of 87002, I wouldn't be too downbeat, as I know that it does happen. I'd wait for it's next tour, and book with the same faith I had for this one.

Could be worse: at least they got home! And a 57 is better than nothing I suppose.

Thats quite alright, not many people knew I was. Even though I never went on the tour. That was just my opinion.

You are quoted as saying "I Purchased a ticket" but say you were not on the tour??
Poor grammer or misleading people, lets take a vote.

Bottom line is people will be dissapointed and some may not be that were on board

I was posting hypothetically, although I should have added "If I had". Apologies for that.

If I was Joe Public going for the day out (why to Glasgow though!?) I would be dissappointed, but only because the train was late. If I was a crank, I'd be dissappointed because of the loss of the booked traction, but not enough to say I wasted hard earned cash, because I know that things do and will go wrong with any form of traction, be it heritage or modern.

Trying to be clever and just pure gibbering  Failures happen, such is life. Nice to know you wouldn't be dissapointed with ronnie vice 87 tho, complete scoop anything type then!?!

At least it wasn't the rancid can on the back! after the initial disappointment had died (by about the time of leaving the sewer on the mega wedged 334 riot) the failure didn't really put much of a downer on my day, still a good day out.

<( Oi! There's lots to see and do in Glasgow! Great shopping, museums and restaurants. Enough for a day trip, but you're probably better to come for a week or so and see all around the local area, where there is much more to do than can be done in a day trip.

And, if you bring a stab vest, your stay in the Royal Infirmary will be much shorter

Good to hear feedback from someone who actually was on the Tour.

Yes it was no ones fault so shoot me if I said wrong about anyone.
All im trying to do is in my tiny mind possible come up with a way that these things could be prevented as like has been said people have to earn their money for these things and well whats the point if things like this can happen.

As for complete jabber I hardly doubt it I have managed to come up with a controversial point of view which has got people shooting me out the sky.

I have visited it many a time, but it would seem humour has bypassed you. Did you go on the tour? Are you allowed an opinion? Because it would seem I'm not :-?
