Class 80X Electrical

Hope everyone is doing well and is having a wonderful week so far.



I am currently learning the electrical system on the Class 80X sets and I have a few questions



  • Does the 9 car sets use both transformers or just one?


  • Does the APS bus carry 110V across the set to provide hotel power?


  • Am I right in thinking the coil looking structures on the roof by the pan are inductors?

A 5 car has 2 transformers and yes they are both used, a 9 car has 3 and they are all used

On a 5 car there are 2 APS on a 9 there are 4 which run around 396V this is broken down to various outputs for different systems but yes provide the whole train with power.

I don’t know what’s around the Pan except 2 different VCB’s

Cheers for your reply. Am I right in thinking power goes from the Pantograph to the Transformer which is then passed through the 4 rectifiers and then the power is distributed on the APS Bus?

On modern rolling stock the transformer output (if drawing power) or transformer input (if sufficient energy from regenerative braking) goes through a "Four Quadrant Converter" usually known as a 4QC.
The 4QC is much more than a rectifier as it can act a as an inverter to convert the DC from regen to AC to go though the transformer and do active power factor correction and reduce harmonics, thus reducing the size of the passive components (resulting in space and weight savings - though not as much as Hitachi would have liked because the then chose a lowish switching frequency for the IGBT traction inverters resulting in additional passives being required compared to the original design).
