Yesterday I was on 1643 Liverpool to Euston formed of 805008 and 805009. Shortly before departure it was announced it wouldn't be stopping at Runcorn. My first thought, as the train was overcrowded, was that they were limiting local passengers on the train and we would make a stop to pick up, but no, we passed through without stopping. AWC journey check showed it as 'follow the failure of a previous train'. I think the 805 provision was a late set swap, but was wondering if the 805s aren't permited to stop at Runcorn?

Strangely the not stopping at Runcorn is indeed down to the train being formed of 2x805s, allegedly a despatch issue with Class 805s not being able to safely be despatched on that platform [platform 1] at the Station. What I don't understand is that the first two Liverpool to London services yesterday morning were also formed 2x805s and appear to have called as normal.

Could be down to staffing, you’d need multiple dispatchers due to the platform curve and this may not have been available at the time of OP’s journey.

Thanks for the explanation though does seem odd that the first two called. Another oddity on the 1643 was that no explanation was given for not stopping and it wasn't announced until about 5 minutes before leaving Lime Street.
