Please move this post if there is a thread on this subject already.
Hi. An interesting idea I read in one of the Railway publications from January 2020. Southport platforms are going to be needing extending to accommodate an 8 car set of a Class 777.
One idea was to extend the platforms forward back into the concourse into the shopping area, something I'd not given any thought to. This would be mainly for platforms 2 & 3, as I'm not sure even a 6 car 507/8 can fit on platform 1 at present.
The present ticket barriers could be moved and turned 90 degrees in line with the Mtogo shop and M&S store, leaving the rear entrance for M&S still accessible. By my calculations, an extra 10.8m would be needed. I'm not sure if there are 11 meters from the present buffer-stop to the windows of M&S. However, could they extend the platform by 5.4 meters at both ends. This would then bring an 8 car 777 further into Southport. Would this then enable it to clear the points and signals which I believe is also a problem? If it can clear them, surely this suggestion would be an easier solution then having to redesign the track layout, move points and signals.
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
Thanks
