We have had a few mentions previously of 710s on routes normally operated with 378s, but I've not seen mention of the East London Line before...

I've just seen 710 266 at New Cross Gate depot...

Have they been down this bit before?

It's photographable from passing trains if anyone wants to try - I didn't get a picture myself as I wasn't expecting it and my camera was in my bag!!

They cannot be used in passenger service due to the lack of end evacuation in the tunnel under the Thames. Someone else may be able to find a reason as to why they are there.

1 or 2 710s were tested down from LBG to west Croydon (?) I believe in 2021/2022 I remember seeing an image of 1 there

5Q92 1023 Willesden TMD to Silwood Sidings via Kensington, Brixton & Crystal Palace ran today (SAT 12/04) shown as a Class 710 on RTT, so this is presumably how 710266 got to New Cross, but there is no explanation as to why, unless it is for depot attention - there is a wheel lathe there, could be for that?

Seems a long way to send a unit for a wheel lathe - isn't there one at Wembley, which is literally a few minutes trip working away from Willesen?

I just passed New Cross Gate depot and saw 2 710s (4 car), took a photo and lo and behold there’s a thread on here about it.

If that picture was this morning ( which your wording suggests ) and they haven't moved anything around, that'll be 710 266 in full view there - that's exactly where it was when I saw it.

Now... if you saw two... what was the second one?

Wow that is very interesting. Have the regulations on the ELL changed?
Pretty sure they're cleared for ECS work but as mentioned above they'll never operate normal services on the ELL section of the Overground due to the lack of emergency passenger access at the front of the units for tunnels. See Classes 378/717s. 345s are fine as the tunnels are wider and have passenger walkways on the side of the tunnel for evacuation. You'll note all Underground trains have a front access door for the same reason.

They are there for testing through the ELL core to satisfy a contractual agreement that 710s be tested on all LO routes. Been told its a tick box exercise to make sure someone gets paid. Tested platform & tunnel clearance & SDO yesterday.

yep one unit was 710266, i think the other was 710257. They were coupled up and worked as an 8 car. The reason they were spilt in NXGD was they were fouling a walking route.

There's another test scheduled for tonight then will be worked back to willesden TMD via Clapham Jn tomorrow morning.

Don't think they will be going via Clapham Junction station, they bypass using the Factory Junction-Latchmere line which goes under the main lines.

Yeh the 378 transfers use that route. I worked 5Q02 last night and the ROG driver said they were working it to Clapham and we work it back from there.

In this case it will be going via Crystal Palace and Clapham Jn P16.

So this sounds about right.
