Class 707 Future

Hi All
I just wanted to make a thread to see what people thought about the future of the Class 707s currently with SWR. I think that they will move to Southern to replace the 313s and/or Class 455s

Moving to Southern to replace anything has been denied by insiders many many times.

That's closed though... Last I heard they may go to the South Eastern franchise...?

Well obviously, but that’s also been suggested in numerous previous threads about Southeastern, which is probably where you first heard of it...

i dont believe there are any known plans. Ive heard two other rumours about 455/313 replacement........SWT 455s and 456s or/and 379s from stansted express.

Although 379's would be nice on the south coast, wouldn't that be a bit overkill for premier units? Don't know whether or not they are/would be compatible with 387's? If so, then yes, perhaps this would make more sense than using 455's/456's

They certainly won't be replacing the 455's at Southern. Whilst realistically Southeastern is likely going to be where they will end up, I reckon they could end up at Great Northern to give them an all Desiro City fleet, the 387's in turn could be converted to bi-mode and replace 171's on the Uckfield line.

They could also end up at Northern or TPE if the TransPennine line is ever electrified.....

i think weve murdered this subject many times.... 379s if compatible could just become part of the overall 377 fleet....or even replace 387s on GX. Think there needs to be big software changes to make them all compatible.

Something i did hear Southern management say once was that they want to be an electrostar only franchise..... but....we are not even show how and if the franchise is going to be split in 2021.

Personal opinion is they'll end up at Southern in MetroLand & the surplus 377s will make their way down to the Coastway again.

Latest SE rumours are that the prospective franchise bidder is going to order a new metro fleet.

They’re only metro units currently. Remember 700s do some long distances, they’d still be going shorter distances if they worked CX - Tun Wells & VIC - Ashford in place of 465/9s or 377s - remember it’s not just the metro that uses Networkers!

379s are likely to stay in OHL land and they won't be going anywhere until 2021 at the earliest due to the delays with the Aventras. That same delay will see the 707s continue on SWR for 3-4 years yet.

Regarding the suggestion of using Class 379s, I was under the impression that the electrified routes south of the Thames is totally different from what the 379s were designed to run on.

Were the 379s ever specified or equipped for future DC use when first built?

We have been through this many times. Please have a browse through some of the existing threads on 707s or the forthcoming SouthEastern franchise if anyone is interested.

Even if the discussion about 707s were ongoing here, this is not a master thread for discussing 313/379/455/GTR cascades.
