I'm in agreement it's probably the least worst choice but the communications around it have been appalling.
I'm so very long out of things, I couldn't comment on their comms in today's world, but in this day and age, the world and more has access to all such info, so to try hide reasons for this and that in a smoke and mirrors sense is utterly pointless to my mind!

Amused to see a large poster at Martins Heron this morning. 'There will be some minor changes to services at this station'. Try explaining that to the lady wondering where her 0903 train to Waterloo was. And with the schools on holiday that train in particular would be expected to be pretty busy in August...

Came back from Reading on 2C46 this afternoon. There were a couple of SWR chaps in my carriage who at every station looked out from the doors and checked presumably if it was positioned on the platform properly. Are they still doing platform interface checks?
My guess is they are trainee guards doing route learning, it’s a pretty common sight to see on the network. Stepping off the train and seeing the platform, train accommodation etc. It’s something I’ve done myself whilst training.

Confused as to why testing is occurring on Reading if all suburban lines have been cleared.

Perhaps it is testing internal software? I know that when 345s were introduced that some units were used as software testbeds that ran with later versions of software than those currently in passenger service, so maybe it is the same with 701s? When the version of software under test was cleared for use, it would be rolled out to the passenger fleet and the testbed unit would then move on to the next set of software changes that had to be tested. If so it would explain why a unit would go from accepted for passenger use, albeit briefly a long time ago, to only accepted for testing.

Today's testing (701028):

5T91 - Clapham Yard - Reading - normal.
5T92 - Reading - Clapham Yard - normal - finishes at 00:20.

Confused as to why testing is occurring on Reading if all suburban lines have been cleared.
They've got to test the trains somewhere!

Smart decision from SWR, albeit painful for commuters.

It will be well appreciated over the christmas season when training demands aren't quite as high as currently required.

I suspect with this plan, we will see a steady weekly diagram move over consistently very soon.

Short term pain, long term gain. Also wouldnt surprise me if SWR/DFTO buckle to public pressure, reinstate services only to backlash in the winter months when the 455s are dropping like flys and not enough drivers trained for the 701s.

Might be a smart decision technically, but the PR around the implementation had been an object lesson in how not to do things and to lose all good will. It's appalling - deliberately keeping it low key in the hope that no one would notice, then only revealing the withdrawn services and the real reasons behind it all when there's the inevitable kick-back. It really could not have been handled any more poorly at precisely the time that SWR, as the flagship of the government's policy, needs to demonstrate that it really is transparent and accountable as we were told the nationalised railway would be.
I suspect with this plan, we will see a steady weekly diagram move over consistently very soon.
Given we're more less seeing a weekly diagram go over currently I'd expect something more than that!

I do wonder why they didn't say on the posters "this is to help bring our new, better trains into service faster". Own it! It's a good reason!

My partner mentioned seeing the poster and thinking it was just for saving money because it's public now.

By comparison, might anyone know how many pairs of 455s are in service?
It doesn’t quite answer your question but the info is probably contained in this excellent thread somewhere

I think there are about 32 pairs yet to go the knacker’s yard

Was at Weybridge at midday today, and saw 034 working 2S34. It's the first time I've seen a 701 on this line, is this week the first time it's worked this route?

This is still Thursday, there is still time for an STP issue to go live for next week (just) but it will take time to go through the relevant processes.
STP's are posted on Wednesday. There is nothing on the Carriage working notices or crew diagrams showing a new 701 diagram next week

There's a certain irony that this (hopefully very temporary) hiatus coincides with the timetable reductions aimed at speeding up introduction.

At Waterloo there’s only around 3-4 drivers being trained per week currently. It was around 10 until a few weeks back. Shows just how constrained they are with annual leave and ad hoc leave being taken.

I did think keeping up the one new diagram per week for much longer was too much to expect given all the previous problems introducing the trains. Oh well. Wonder long this latest hiatus will last.

Its summer time, the temporary reduction in training was bound to happen as most drivers have annual leave placed for the summer period, especially those with kids who are off school.

It’s unnecessary when there’s a physical latch. It’s obviously not a requirement when other trains with a latch don’t have this beeping.
Just oddly enough got on this GA 720 and on using the non wheelchair toilet which has a physical rotating latch it makes the exact same 3 beeps as on the 701 universal toilets which confirms it would be due to some requirement on the Aventras to have one.

So really what you're saying (and granted SWR have changed their story more than once) is that SWR were going to be short of drivers anyway and rather than risk cancellations (and the prospect of customers being able to claim compensation) they simply cut the timetable?

It's a win win for SWR - cut the timetable with zero penalty while ensuring that passengers can't claim compensation. Master stroke.
