Simple question....

Up to now where are you most likely to see a Class 70?

Apart from the bottom of Newport Docks...:D

Basingstoke sees the Intermodal ones every day, Bristol sees the Heavy Haul ones most days.

There are lots of other places.

There are quite a few diagrams:

- coal from Liverpool to Ratcliffe

- coal from Ellesmere Port to Fiddlers Ferry

- coal from Portbury to Uskmouth/Rugeley

- ballast from Mountsorrel to Crewe

- departmental traffic from Crewe to Carlisle

- intermodal services from Southampton to Trafford Park/Wentloog/Garston

- intermodal services from Felixstowe to Lawley Street/Ipswich yard

(many of the above can also produce a 66, depending on class 70 availability)

So while there are quite a few different diagrams, there is no convenient
'hotspot' where you can see all/most of them - you have to target specific
trains, I'm afraid...

I saw one on the S and C last year on a coal train, though I'm not sure if this is a regular turn for a 70?

Ipswich, there always seems to be an interesting selection of power at Ipswich. Last time I went through present were 31, 66, 70 and 90.

I went on a 70 hunt last year (or even a bit before then) and saw my first one on a second visit to Ipswich (there were two parked up in the yard). Since then I've found that the less effort I put into finding them, the easier they were to see! I've seen them at Walsall (saw two freights there in about ten minutes on a Saturday last May!), Basingstoke, Crewe Basford Hall (organised tour) and a few at Ipswich.

It was, but not any more!:(

The only regular class 70 duty north of Warrington now
is 6C16 Crewe to Carlisle and 6K27 return.

What ever you do, don't go to Barnetby to see one. It's all class 66s and 60s.

Considering a move to Memphis
Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but 70009 was at LNWR Crewe this evening, in a completely all over green livery. How long has it been like this, and what is the reason for it ? Have searched Flikr and can't find anything.

[ I have a photo, but it is very poor, so won't post it - will try for better one tomorrow ]

70004, 70010, 70013, 70015 are regular visitors to Earles sidings, Peak forest, and Tunstead quarry all in the Hope Valley. Mainly for cement but also pull the heavy haul hoppers.

Here's a few snaps of them in action.

Keep missing the damn things... Though i was lucky enough to see 70099 being hauled north the other week near Stafford; my train was delayed by a points failure at the time.

Does anyone know if FL will be carrying on with 70021-030 or has the order been stopped with 020?

(Sorry if this has been asked before elsewhere, I'm not good with keeping up with things like this).

Class 70's are only occasional visitors now to Bristol (Stoke Gifford) and South Wales as they were not a great success in the area when new. Try Southampton and Crewe where they can be seen more often.

They're taking their time yellowing-up the ends... Not gonna get far with testing until they do that. Seems 70099 is just being dragged around the country for no apparent reason!
