Class 68's In Storage

Given that several class 68's have been moved south from Carlisle Kingmoor to go into storage will the decision to purchase additional class 68's eventually be seen as an act of folly?

Your opinions on this would be very much appreciated.

The storage is only temporary.

Is there any intention to run loco hauled stock on the S & C? Surely loco hauled stock on the Cumbrian Coast is only a temporary thing until more units become available?

Their use on the Cumbrian Coast was a bodge to allow Northern to sub-lease class 156 units to TPE so that the loss of the class 170/3s wouldn't be felt as badly.

Thanks for that In that case once TPE starts to receive its new trains (or if Northern beats it to it) I'm assuming that loco hauled services on the Cumbrian Coast will finish.

Up until the landslide, there was a plan being formed to put loco hauled stock on at least during the summer period. The discussions I had with Northern were somewhat amusing and we'd worked out a plan for a 37 plus four/five

No LHCS on S&C which has been discussed at length on the Forum. It has been mooted but ruled out by the Powers to be for operational reasons. Not quite sure of the actual details, though.

Could you be more specific please?

What specific 68s are into storage? Location?

If you are suggesting EMD Longport there could be modifications required.

If Crewe, likely an accounting practice. - yet only some 57/0s are stored at Crewe?

I am not being critical of your posting, but it is a little vague and of course causes speculation.

Quite correct. Class 47s with DRS are now (operationally) history thanks to the 68s, and more new locos will reduce reliance on the 57s. Maybe a couple of 68s could even be painted into carmine for Belmond duties ....

I think I saw one of them go past Lancaster station the other day. I was in the shop so couldn't see very well, but it was pulling what looked like one or two empty container rakes (I'm almost certainly using the wrong terminology. What I mean is like a wagon you'd put a container on but without anything on it).

Incidentally, Freightliner seems to have taken over a couple of the Daventry / Scotland liner diagrams previously operated by DRS.

Given the failures and level of unreliability, wouldn't 4 68s be suitable for the Night Riviera? Doesn't conflict my interest but I'm sure they can definitely do a much better job than 57s GWR currently has right? And then have the 57s running as thunderbirds until the IEPs are introduced? Having 57s based at long rock, laira, old oak common and temple meads to do the thunderbird run?
