Hi all,

I'm hoping someone may be able to help me with a query regarding a class 68.

When passing through Derby today, I could see a DRS Compass-liveried class 68, in the works sidings to the left side of the London-bound lines. It was sandwiched better an 08, and the stores van which always seems to sit in those sidings.

Unfortunately, it was just too far away from my train to read the number, and just 'round the corner' in terms of trying to view from the station platform.

I'm wondering if anyone might be able to confirm which 68 this was; and why it appears to be laid up in the sidings?

The loco in question is 68001.
One would surmise that it is waiting tyre turn on the Etches Park lathe.

How long has 68001 been in commissioned service now? What has been its main work and how many miles would it have possibly racked up?

Its reported as being on Derby RTC. So I wondered if it was being played with / calibrated. I also wondered if it was being got ready to work with the soon to be scrapped available 442s :).

If it is on the Lathe at Etches park then I blame those nasty bits of brown cellulose (leaves).

Brilliant, thank you for your help. I wasn't sure if anyone would know, but figured it was worth a try!

On Thursday/Friday 68001 finally left Derby with a DVT heading for Scotland. The DVT was something like 9720 9710. So my guess is 68001's travels were so as to get and extra DVT to Scotland - no doubt for the beefed up services across the Fourth rail Bridge whilst the much newer road bridge suffers some problems.
