Class 60 Locomotives for sale.

So, DBS have 20 of these locos on their tender list.

It is hard to believe that these relatively recently built (1989-1993.) and very powerful machines are being disposed of. It seems like yesterday when they entered service.

Will any of them see further service? Or even preservation?

I would think it highly unlikely, unless another freight operator or heritage group have a huge amount of cash burning holes in there pockets. Some of the 60's for sale are in very poor condition & will most likely end up being turned in to Razor blades. That said though, somone might find potential for them & give them a new lease of life. Never say never I guess...........

Since our group was created a little over two years ago, The Class 60 Preservation Group have been slowly putting the foundations in place in readiness to act when we are in a position to help secure a member of the once 100 strong fleet for operation in preservation. In preparation for this, we have around 120 active members, of which many have invaluable skills. Many have experience of this locomotive, from designing to building, Electronics to fitting and driving all the way to painting. When it comes to our members people power and skill, we as a group are in very capable hands. We have the drive, focus and determination to succeed.

We have been touring heritage railways with our sales stands, raising awareness and collecting funds. We take part in sponsored events annually, earning our funds along the way. We have professionally designed advertising and promotion, ensuring that we stand out from the crowd in the best possible way.

Their is currently an opportunity being made available by DB Schenker, we have registered our interest in inspecting the available locomotives with a view to possibly placing a bid towards purchasing one. In order to attempt a realistic bid, we must appeal for further funding so as to have as much money available as possible for any possible bid for a Class 60 Locomotive.

Therefore, I would like to appeal for any support which can be put towards the ultimate dream of securing a Class 60 for preservation and in the event that we are unsuccessful this time, due to being outbid or the current locomotives being deemed uneconomical to restore, our overall financial position shall be much healthier for when the next batch of Class 60's become available for purchase.

I do hope a member of the class can be saved, love to see 60 081 - IKB
be done but that depends on the damage it did all those years ago.

Out of curiosity, whats the going rate for a 60?? ..........and an 08??

I'd assume that the price would be determined by the overall condition of the specific loco. But as I said, just an assumption.

Quite a bit I suspect, even for a totally dead one.

Scrap steel is around £150 per tonne, so on that alone a 130 tonne class 60 will come somewhere near the £20000 mark. Subtract the cost of scrapping it of course, but then add on the value of the copper in the electrics at around £3500 a tonne (no idea what proportion of the locos weight is taken up by cabling, armatures, etc but must be a tonne or so) and you're looking at the price of a canny family car!
