Can anyone tell me how many Class 58s there are still in existance in the UK and if possible the state they are in?
Platform 5 book lists 8, being 002, 008, 017 & 037 at Eastleigh, 012 & 023 (it was presumably this one filmed on May 18th) at Toton, 022 at Crewe DMD and 048 at Crewe Electric.
In addition to this 58016 is preserved and currently at Barrow Hill being repaired.
For the record 5 have been scrapped and 36 are abroad (including 033).
I was lucky enough to actually catch sight of 58036 moving under its own power at Eastleigh in 2009 whilst being prepared to go abroad, though it was an odd sight with no doors on the bodyside!
