Class 58 Updates

All 58's have had a short cruel life, such a waste of money withdrawing them so early on.

Seems like 58 001 & 58 050 will not work again according to this list, hopefully they will come back & one can go to the NRM.

58 050 is already reserved for the National Collection, being the SEPEX trial loco and the last loco built at Doncaster.

It seems odd that nobody has taken on any 58s for further use? We've had a mini revival of the 56s, and smaller freight operators using a wide variety of much older BR locos, but nothing on the 58 front. Is this simply EWS not making any available, same as the 60s?

The '58's always looked like two 'cut and shut' 20's to me, am sure several will make it into the preserved ranks eventually. Good update though!

It's hardy a short life - they are now over 25 years old. The Deltics lasted just over 20 years, the 50s weren't much longer and many of the hydraulics only lasted 10-15 years, some much less!

I'd say the only way that a 58 revival would be possible would be if DB sold off the active runners from the French and Spanish contracts if they ever returned to the UK. The rest of the fleet is in pretty poor condition, after being stored for so long and stripped bare for parts for the foreign contracts. DB don't seem to like selling locomotives until they are utterly beyond use.

EWS, before DB Schenker took over, felt that they could get more use out of the 58s by shipping many of them abroad on European contracts, or selling them on outright for a new lease of life in Europe. The few locos that remained in Britain were in several cases those that had been stripped of parts to allow those sent to Europe to be returned to working order, so there would be little interest in them from an operational point of view.

At least some 56s remained in reasonably good nick in Britain after a contingent of the class had been sent to France, by dint of the larger total fleet size, so could be reused by other operators.

That makes sense from their business point of view, but it's a heck of a waste! :roll:

It's a crying shame but the only realistic way, bar a miracle, a 58 would be back in action on NR metals would be a preserved example. I used to like the look of the 58's, they still looked modern and sleek in the 90's and carried all liveries very well indeed.

I agree, they have a 'functional' ruggedness about them, as if they mean business
