Class 504's At Stoke On Trent

Sorry if ive got this in the wrong thread.
I remember reading why some Class 504's were at Stoke On Trent but ive completly forgot.
Can anyone refresh my memory please.

They were stored there for some time (several years) in Cockshute sidings before being sent for scrap.

The doors were probably removed for spares ( slammer doors are very vulnerable to damage! ) before the units were removed from their depots and despatched for scrap.

I have several pictures in my albums of EPBs and SUBs en route for scrap or in yards minus doors, so it would have been a standard practice.

I've got a book that shows some 506s stored there as well, sometime in the 80s.

Incidentally, ask anyone around here about "Cockshute", and they don't know what the hell you're on about!
