Class 47 hauled.

Can anyone tell me if there are any class 47 hauled passenger services still to
be had anywhere in the country,excluding specials and charters.Also i was
watching a clip on utube which involved a 47 pulling a rake of mark 2,s out
of sunderland station,can anyone tell me what this is please.

I can't think of any remaining passenger workings by 47s, the Maryport - Workington North shuttles had a 47 on them fairly regularly but they ended ages ago now.

Depending on when the clip was filmed it could be a charter, a GC Shuttle to York (due to the poor reliability of the HSTs when they first started up, that also ended a long time ago) or if it is very old then it could be a timetabled service on the Durham Coast Line. If you post a link to the video someone will probably be able to identify it.

Sure it was mark 2s with the 47 at Sunderland? The only recent ones there have been the Hartlepool Tall Ships shuttles (between Darlo and Sunderland) and the GC shuttles when the HSTs were knackered, which ran between York and Sunderland. Think both times they were mk3s.

What a weekend that was! Just like the old days - there was some "energetic" running at times along with some claggtastic departures -Wonderful stuff

PS it was the Cargo D mk3 rake and a rake of Mks2 (i think!)

For a short while the Grand Central Sunderland-York shuttles ran with a pair of Riviera 47s and EWS Maroon mark 2s. I can remember that the driver training runs were carried out with a pair of DRS 47s and the DRS mark 3s.

Tall Ships shuttles was definitely mark 3s. There may well have been a mark 2 rake as well, I'm not sure.

Don't think I saw a mk2 rake on the Tall Ships shuttles but couldn't remember the GC ones. Actually quite nice to get the GC 47s to York and back, especially since the Durham Coast line is not renowned for its loco hauled workings as well.

There was definitely plenty of variety around the start of the Grand Central Sunderland service launch. Whatever happened, you couldn’t lose! 47s+mark 3s, 47s+mark 2s or Valenta fitted HSTs. It made the Durham Coast a bit more interesting.

57s do a lot more than Thunderbird duties- they haul the FGW Night Riviera and ATW WAG Express- plus the North Wales Pendolino drag isn't, strictly speaking, a "Thunderbird" operation even though it uses the designated locos.

Oh yeah there’s the bodysnatchers to consider as well. All in all, the quantity of UK loco hauled passenger trains in the 21st century isn’t in as bad a state as we like to believe really.

That's not very many 57 services- a sleeper each way daily, a return trip by the WAG Express and a return Pendolino drag at the weeknds(?).
Other diesel- there's WSMR's 67 services, is that four each way per day, to go down to three but with a Chiltern service essentially replacing it.

The Scotrail Fife Circle services- two a day? Only because they don't have enough DMUs.
Electrics:
Two sleepers each way six nights a week, with a split at the north end for one of those.
One relief set on the West Coast because of Pendolino wreckages.
East Coasts 91s and NXEAs 90s.
