Class 458 Strange Cab Fittings

The other day I had to pass in the cab of a Class 458 - a strange train of many interesting design quirks it seems.

I was particularly intrigued by this piece of strange design (see photo) to the right of the driver's seat, featuring a cut-away in the wall, and a cage surrounding the horn.

The only thing I thought this might've been is a footrest, with the cage protecting the horn from being accidentally sounded by your knee if you've got your leg on the ledge.

Can anybody confirm or deny?

Maybe for when you're coming into the cab, so you don't knock it accidentally? I imagine the cab is a bit cramped with the gangway.

The cage wasn’t there originally. It was added later. It’s colloquially known as the Bryce Bracket, after one of the driving legends of the Southern who apparently kept knocking the horn when it was unguarded.
