If anymore class 458/5's catch fire, at what point does SWT give up on them and order further Class 707's?

Freightliner gave up on ordering more Class 70s, Colas took on the remainder of their option. That's a different example however, 70012 didn't even make it to land. The only thing in common with the units in discussion are moments of sporadic self-combustion!

There's an option for 20 additional Class 707 units on top of the current order and Crossrail 2 into the more distant future. But after the resources poured into the Class 458/5 project one would hope they could last a while longer.

I feel like shouting.

A battery lead short circuited when changing some batteries and a few cells popped

THERE WAS NO BIG FIRE

I did shout. Sorry but it had to be done

Sorry!

That was the internet factor. I apologise :D
Just don't let the Daily Mail loose on our forums...

Would reporters from the Daily mail be able to keep up on the threads on this forum?

Back to the passenger workings, would I be right in saying that all booked formations ran yesterday (3 June)? In fact only one short formation in the evening peak from Waterloo was listed on Journeycheck, the 1745 to Havant, which was 8.450 instead of 10.444 (the 1902 to Guildford via Cobham was to be 4 coaches at one point but ran with the full 8).

Things seem to have gone very quiet again. There haven't been any Reading line diagrams swapping over to 450s for a couple of months now. The last unit to enter service, 458524, only seems to have been used to bolster availability on the existing diagrams. 458525 has been "on test" for about six weeks now.

Can't see it all being completed by the end of the year...

I saw one driving car from said 458 029 on an Allely's low loader at Wimbledon this evening, observed from the 18.09 Waterloo - Guildford via Epsom, so it's a safe bet that the move is on.

8029 should be disappearing north on a lorry a bit at a time

Two coaches of 458029 arrived at Doncaster Wabtec this lunchtime :p

I wonder if the programme with be finished before the first 707s enter service!

I'm wondering if the program will be finished by the time all 707s are in service along with any follow on order of 707s (if there ever is a follow-on order)

About a month ago your summary reported '13 to go', but that one listed 458015 as in the process, since returned to service; so should have been 14 to go. So it's two more 458/0s in hand this month, and hopefully that rate should see the work finished by January, i.e. 18 months late compared to the first SWT announcement..

Only 12 to go!

Although for much of the day on the Reading line you'd be forgiven for thinking that nothing had changed from a couple of years ago, given that SWT seem to be concentrating on converting mainly peak hours diagrams to 450 operation.

There still appear to be five pairs of 458/0 diagrams in the interpeak, with just two pairs being 450/0s.

By a process of elimination though, does that mean that no (or very nearly no) 458/0s can possibly be in use anywhere else? Or do they send all 12 out every day? I think that the pairs take 3 ½ hours from leaving Waterloo, doing a round trip and starting again?

14 units are required for the off-peak service. Currently, 10 are 458/0s and 4 450s. Unless there have been changes to the diagrams this week, the remaining two 458/0s are used in the peaks, which probably explains the short formations so far this week.

Next week is Royal Ascot week, which sees a huge increase in off-peak diagrams on the Reading line. Should be interesting...

Thanks. So probably reasonably close to another pair of 450s on Readings, say within another month?

What's the acceleration like for the 458/0s 458/5 and 450s? Do 450s have way better performance then 458s?

You can still catch 458s on the peak Waterloo-Aldershot via Ascot services, or at least on some of them. The 1805 Waterloo-Aldershot being formed of a pair of 458s used on Off Peak Reading services.

A few have gone by road 8005, 8019, 8029.

Normally means SWT are ready, Wabtec are ready but presumably Colas cannot resource a loco/driver or can't get a path perhaps. The program is behind enough

Wasn't some of the original work split between Doncaster and Loughborough? Or did that only affect ex 460 units?
