I noticed there must have been an apparent rise in SWTs rolling stock getting the graffiti treatment as of late - I had 444021 or 444023? twice last week which look like it had at least the FC coach unfortunately plastered in the stuff. So good luck to those in BTP on these cases!

Last week a 450 coach had its whole side covered, including the windows! It worked in from outside London that morning before ending up on Hounslows

Windsor diagram cancelled this morning.

Indeed, door fault given as the reason for both today and yesterday. Luckily they found an 8 car out of somewhere (previously they had to split an 8 car from another service to give 4 to both), I think it may be a 455 today as well as their Journeycheck page says no toilets are available :P

Interestingly the additional peak Reading service is a 455. Never seen that before. Come back 458/5!!!

Yeah, looks like they found 2x450, stuck it on the Windsor and the 455s that were on the Windsor diagram, they put on a Reading diagram instead. What's wrong with SWT sometimes?!

The 450s end at Staines, the 455s at Wimbledon. Simple.

Please stop posting facts that support these decisions!

We all know that the railways go out of their way to **** the passengers off and make life as difficult as possible for them!

Further to your point, there are no 455s that overnight at Staines so if the 455s were put on the Windsor diagram (and so the 450s on the Reading) then tomorrow morning one of Staines diagrams would have had to have the 455s put on it anyway, at least this way all trains end up in the correct place for the runout in the morning.

There is a much bigger picture than the next few hours when these decisions are made but I am certain it wont stop short sighted individuals moaning as if the world is about to end because they got a horrible red train instead of of a blue one!

You could always store the the unit in the UP goods loop overnight and then get a WM or VZ to take it away the next morning. ;)

Oh, I'm so, so, so, so sorry for raising it. I know you railway people are perfect in every respect and never make anything wrong and I'm just a nuisance passenger who should pay my fare and just shut up. I wish I knew your secret of perfection so I could do my job perfectly.

As for those Royal Ascot people, how dare they have a day of fun and drinking - serves them right if they're stuck on a train with no toilets for an hour.

Or simply swap the units later in the evening rather during the morning?

Well they certainly are not p!ssing me off today as I sit in a first class carriage for yet a third day.

Yesterday the guard evening happily pointed out people could sit in first class. I imagine it might confuse some at Surbiton, who do receive a first class service, although slightly less so during the morning peak rush hour.

I see one of the 458/5 diagrams is 455 again this morning, plus there's a short formation on a 450 diagram.

Royal Ascot week isn;t certainly not the best time for the 458/5s to play up (or play up more than usual, I should say).

450s are great trains and I have always found them much smarter inside than the electrostars

I rarely travel on 455s I imagine a replacement will be sought with the next franchise

So when will all these 458/5s be in service getting ridiculous

That's unlikely because of the project to fit new AC traction motors to the fleet. Any new trains will likely be to supplement 455s to allow more 10-carriage trains rather than replace.

Don't get me wrong, the 455's are pretty decent little trains, its just I was getting used to having a seat in both directions. :p

Cor, they are biting well today!;)
Some people take things far too seriously.

The 455s are being remotored so will be around for quite a few years yet.

As for the 458/5s, I think I will be retired before they settle down. ;)

As for a certain person mentioning getting a VZ crew to swap the unit over, how dare you expect them to work on nights, they have to revise section Z of the rule book, they are experts on it.;)

I reckon they'll be in service for a good 40 years if not more.

Guess that means you'll be in employment for the foreseeable future, assuming you continue to sign them?

Well I guess we have to take the good with the bad. Universal balance and all that. :D

Can they be fitted with AC equipment and pantographs in the future? If they can't then they might not be around for 40 more years

I didn't say 40 more years though. They've been in service since 1982 so...

The costs would be astronomical to add a pantograph well (though as I understand it the new motors will be AC like most modern stock).

They can (except the ex 460 units, no pantograph well) but as the rules have changed they need 3 of something (ACUs?) but they only have 2 so they would have to fit another fitted because somebody in an office says so even though it isnt really needed in normal service.

I think the question was about the re-tractioned 455s though, (although in a 458 thread!) in which case probably not that easy...

On the 455 ventilation issue, if they're going to be around longer will there be any adjustments to the windows, does anyone know? SWT have said that it's not possible to change the design but to a layman (I know) it looks like it could be possible to fit wider restricting baffles (see how I am with the technical words?) to allow the hoppers to open further. Just would make a massive difference in hot weather or even in warmish weather when full.

SWT stated at the last "passenger forum" that with retractioning the 455s will have another ten years life - that would make them about 45 years old upon withdrawl. I would be very surprised if the next franchise doesn't include replacement of the 455s and 456s.

Concur - but with the proviso that the next franchise may not actually be providing the stock if Crossrail 2 takes over many of the relevant routes anyway.

SWT's long term replacement or successor franchise may not have to solve the problem at all.

They used to open wider but were restricted to ½ way when they were refurbished because yobs kept throwing seat cushions and other stuff out of the hoppers.

Personally I've never found 455s too warm, even in the summer evening rush hour.

It is a shame that the window opening hasn't been restored given the current seats are somewhat more difficult to take apart / come apart than the old ones. My recollection is that it was not uncommon to find loose seat pads and that is why they ended up at the lineside.

I will agree that 455s could do with some better ventilation even if its just a couple of fans to improve airflow.
