I was asked this today and while I thought I knew the answer I quite obviously don't....

Why are the 455/7s Numbered 455701 to 455742 and then single unit 455750?

Thanks in advance.

5750 was originally numbered 5743 but was renumbered 5750 way back when it was named after Wimbledon depot. The event was after ‘WD’ achieved BS5750 quality accreditation - hence the number.

Similar thing happened to 60016 which became 60500 in line with its name.

5743 became 5750 at Wimbledon Depot Open day 6-5-91. It was named 'Wimbledon Train Care' at the same event. Nameplate carried on the 508 trailer, TS 71538.
The name plates were removed when the unit was refurbished in 4-06.

Which is what? An interesting recent development - renumbering locos/units specifically to align with names/events. I can't imagine this being of any interest to anyone but (some) enthusiasts and wonder why it's thought worthwhile. I can't think of any older (BR-era or thereabouts) examples - have I missed any?

from wikipedia,
60 016Langdale PikesRail MagazineRenumbered 60 500, in November 2004, to commemorate 500th issue of Rail Magazine
which indicates that yes, very much done for enthusiasts!
