Living alongside the Weymouth to Waterloo main line between new Milton and Brockenhurst I occasionally see a class 455 EMU.

Do these units do a regular run to Bournemouth TCD for maintenance or is it just a case of stock availability?

They regularly go down to Bournemouth to visit the depot there, same with the 458's.

There would have to be some serious problems with the Desiros for a 455 to appear on a passenger service that far south!

In all serious though, has that ever happened?

I believe 455s are clear to run with passengers as far south as Southampton. However, I don't know if they've actually ever run in passenger service beyond Basingstoke.

As for 458s, I think the furthest they've worked in service on the SWML is Eastleigh (on a Portsmouth via Basingstoke service).

Last time I checked class 455's are not cleared to run any further than Basingstoke on the main line, they can run the full length of the windsor lines, all suburban lines and as far as Haslemere on the Portsmouth Direct in passenger service however I could be wrong.

I also can't remember the class 458's ever running to Portsmouth Hbr, they were originally first leased to replace the aging class 400's but due to a couple of "issues" the Class 458's ended up spending the first few years of their life sat around for a long time in both clapham yard and Wimbledon park and never ran in passenger service again I could be wrong.

Interesting, I think it was on here I read that they are clear to SOU in pax service.

I'm sure I've seen a photo of a Class 458 at Eastleigh in pax service.
