I was on a class 450 from Clapham Junction earlier in the front carriage doing the London Waterloo - Reading service which over this weekend is going via Wimbledon and Kingston, then down to Twickenham before going back in the opposite direction from which it came to go to Feltham on the normal route line for Reading.

The front carriage PIS as per the attached photo had coach 8 of 8, yet it was leading the train. I thought the leading coach when two class 450's are coupled together was always coach 1 of 8, but would change when the driver drives the train from the opposite end?

Probably just a glitch in the system, it happens from time to time.

I would imagine this to be deliberate, as the section on the normal route would then have the correct carriage numbers due to the reversal at Twickenham.

I use this line very regularly and have sat on the train at Twickenham when this diversion is in place wating for the PIS 7 of 8 to change to 2 of 8 and so far that has always happened when they reversed at Twickenham.

That is one confusing set-up. Which coach am I in? 2? Oh, no, 7.

It should change automatically when the driver puts their key on, the cab which the key is put of automatically becomes coach 1. I have seen them in reverse before too though.

But that is the thing the PIS showing coach 8 of 8 do not change even after doing the reversal after Twickenham. In fact that PIS was correct after the reversal after Twickenham, as I was in coach 8 of 8 as I was in the last coach between Twickenham to Martins Heron where I got off.

However, when I got on the train at Clapham Junction, into the first carriage the PIS was showing coach 8 of 8, yet was the leading carriage.

In that case it must have been a fault with that particular unit, as I stated above I have had numerous experiences of diversions via Twickenham/Wimbledon and I have never personally witnessed the PIS sytem not updating when the driver changed ends. After all this is no different to when a train arrives and leaves Waterloo or any other termini.

Coach 8 of 8 leading isn't really an issue, as long as it is clear where the front is.

No different to Coach H being at the front of an HST and Coach A at the back.

Guards can make announcements as to whether 8 is leading or whether 1 is leading, and where to be at certain stations.
