Two quick questions:

- Are 442s running to Brighton at the moment, or are they Gatwick and return?
- Are they working exclusively from Victoria?

Thanks!

You can find them on some Brightons. Not sure which ones.
I also believe there is a single peak time London Bridge to Eastbourne service.

On 13th August I was onboard the 19:19 1A57 from Brighton to Victoria, running fast to East Croydon, which was worked by a 442. Not sure if this is a regular occurance, but there were a couple of 10 car 442's down at Brighton that evening, I think one of them moved back up to Gatwick as ECS, if that's any help :P

I believe some 442s stable at Lovers Walk depot. When I was last there, the 1849 to Victoria was worked by a single 442 but had come in as a 10-car formation - the rear unit being detached and stabled at the depot.

Theres a handful that run, but most express services are 377s. The GatEx Brighton extensions are all 10-car 442s though.

The 19.19 is always a 442, as it comes in as 1 of the above (actually was cancelled the other day due to a fault, but luckily pax were transferred to another 442 which was due to go to a depot). There is also 1 442 from London Bridge to Brighton now, at 17.59.

Yep, 10-car into BTN, divides with the front 5 ECS to Gatwick, rear 5 running the 18.49.

Looking at the timetable here, do the reverse print E in a circle (indicating Brighton Express trains) and/or the square saying "Restricted access" give an indication that that service will be worked by a class 442? I was thinking of using a Southern Daysave ticket and wanted to see if I could get a ride on a class 442.

Thanks everyone for the information. Planning on going for a bash tomorrow.

If I get a first class off-peak return ticket, am I entitled to travel on any train to Brighton? The one I'm looking at is the 1845 GatEx service, then the 2019 Southern service, both of which are marked as "restricted access" in the timetable, so I'm presuming 442.

As detailed in the sticky thread for frequently requested diagrams, that symbol means that it is booked a 442. There are never any guarantees of course!

It might even be the same train back, would be around the right time for it (note: the trains are all operated by Southern, GatEx ceased to be a TOC in 2008 and is merely a brand name for some Southern operated services)

As for the restriction codes for any particular off peak ticket for any given flow, they are available on the National Rail website but the method is convoluted, so I suggest you use brfares.com instead.

Yup, I'm aware of the meaning of the symbol, hence aiming for those trains. I do remember tho a while ago there was some hassle over people with normal Southern tickets using GatEx services, so I wanted to know if that had been cleared up and if I was ok to use those GatEx with a "regular" ticket ie, not one purchased specifically for use with the GatEx service.

If your ticket is marked 'Southern Only', then you might* encounter some problems (as detailed in previous threads) as some claim that 'Southern Only' means trains with the Southern brand, however the NRCoC states that some tickets restrict you to a particular Train Company. All Class 442 trains are operated by the Southern Train Company. However some people believe that the brand Gatwick Express, which ceased to be a Train Company in late 2008, counts as a Train Company for the purpose of tickets. That is not a view I share.

* But probably not, as there are not on-board ticket inspectors on these trains, the on-board ticket inspectors appear to have been re-deployed to gatelines at Gatwick and Victoria.

Made the journey as planned - 2424+2420 both ways. Got some fantastic EE thrash once south of Gatwick! Especially the return, which was fast to East Croydon. Didn't realize I got a complimentary cup of tea for being in first class, nice touch. :) Shame there was no trolley service on the return journey.

No problem with tickets, but then they weren't checked at all in either direction.

Thanks for everyone's help with this! :)

Remember that off-peak Brighton services operated by 442s are Southern and not GatEx branded services. They don't even stop at Gatwick, so you'll definitely not have any problems with a Southern only ticket on those.
