Has the class 43 ever been spotted with no coaches?

It has indeed. There are pictures on flickr. I believe it was in Wales and it carried all the passengers in it from the service because a line was blocked (i think, there was a thread, maybe six months ago). It happened ages ago, as the pictures are in intercity Swallow livery.

As in just two power cars running together, or even just one??

I recall seeing a picture in Rail Express a couple of years ago showing just two power cars running together. I think they were National Express East Coast ones. Can't remember anymore details than that. Sorry.

It was on the Newquay branch IIRC

Personally I've only seen one on its own at Edinburgh Waverley years ago. Seen plenty of pics of them singulary mind

Single power car working was frowned upon more in BR days, which isn't to say it never happened, but since privatisation it seems to have become a more common occurence.

FGW seem to be one of the biggest culprits for using HST power cars as locomotives: On more than one occasion, two power cars coupled back to back have rescued failed HSTs, and have even been used to drag the failed Cornish sleeper, complete with class 57 in tow.

Back to back power car movements from works to depots have been fairly common during the MTU re-engining programme.
