The 1205 service from Glasgow to Liverpool was just departing Carlisle today when it came to an abrupt halt. The train then made very loud hissing noises as if air was being released. This happened three times. Does anyone know what might have been the problem?

There was a person hit by a train in the general area at that time. The emergency call from the incident train would have been received by the 397 to which the driver would have placed the brakes to emergency. This was probably the hissing sound. As far as I can see no unit fault.

397s often make a loud hissing sound which is moisture being purged from the air system (when it stops you can sometimes see it spit water out). It's normal and will have been a coincidental occurrence with the brake application.

1M87 reached Oxenholme before getting caught up in the fatality at Hest Bank. As it was departing Carlisle a Passcomm was activated.
