What always strikes me with the 390's and the 220s/221s is how much wasted space there is in each coach - only around 2/3rds of each coach has seats in - the rest is either electrical equipment or huge loos! Bring back the Mark 3 arrangement any day - those coaches made full use of the space. Maybe thats the answer - better designed rolling stock each taking more passengers per coach, rather than more trains per hour?

I think you have to bear in mind that the 390's and 220s/221s are fixed formation units not loco hauled Mk3 coaches with a DVT (or HSTs), therefore each coach has to have a certain amount of equipment in it to facilitate the electrics (and deisel engines for the 220/221) that each coach requires for the unit to function which is not required in a Mk3.

Large toilets are usually located in or near to the wheelchair locations and are primarily meant to cater for disabled travellers.
