Hello could anyone tell me if the subclass (by sumclass I mean the full 6-digit class) of this class 390 can be found based on the 5 digit (68848) number on the side of the carriage?

Pedant here but its actually 390148 'Flying Scouseman' cause of the final 2 digits of the carriage no. I also believe it is Coach E but unsure on that.

It’s actually 390148 ‘Flying Scouseman’ rather than 390138. The last two digits of the carriage numbers on 390s, and many other classes for that matter, match the last two digits of the unit number.

To my knowledge, there is no way to defer if its a 9 or 11 car Pendolino from the carriage number unless you know which units are 9 or 11. Happy to be proved wrong though!

Unless it’s one of the two additional vehicles in a 390/1 that the /0s don’t have. Can’t remember which numbers those ones are.

The first digit (6) indicates that it's an electric vehicle. The last two digits correlate to the unit number. The other digits indicate which type of vehicle it is.

U and G are unique to the 11 car units, I believe before the 9 car units had one carriage of first class converted to standard, that what is now coach F was previously known as coach G, I believe the 11 cars have always had both though.

That would imply F is the other new vehicle on 11 cars

This is correct. The additional 689/653 vehicles are coach U and F

In 2015 the 696 vehicle of 9 cars was converted from. First to Standard changing from Coach G to F

In 2022-3 the 696 vehicle of 11 cars was converted as part of the refurbishment, but remained as coach G (because the train already had a Coach F)

So to Answer the original question, no from the number 68848 you can't tell if it's a 390/0 or 390/1 as all 390s have a 688 vehicle
