One would hope that there would be more of substantial "first class" to segregate, as there really isn't any difference other than the antimacassars. Hopefully they'll get upgraded with a proper first class in due course

Don't hold your breathe.

Not sure which we are up to now, but two 4 car 387 sets were delivered to North Pole IEP depot via a Freightliner 66 and barrier waggons. Could be 387136 and 387137. Anyone to confirm?

Reported as 387136 on its own in another forum, don't know for sure myself.

Does anyone know why the 387s have a wider (taller?) destination display on the offside cab window than the 377s?
I would have thought that this is to allow longer destinations to be displayed on two lines, such as:

Gatwick
Airport

Instead of scrolling like the 377s, but 387s still only use one line of text, and still scroll.

Here's what I mean.

I have read elsewhere that 134 & 136 have joined 130-133 at NP, whilst 135 is at Bletchley and 137 still at Derby.

The latest RAIL magazine also states that the next 14 units will be delivered from December to Reading depot for driver training between Reading & Didcot.

Wiring was almost completed on the reliefs last week (Tilehurst to Didcot) & the line was closed much of the weekend at Tilehurst maybe to finish the job. The gantries are also ready for wires between Scours Lane & the depot, just leaving the crossover between the mains & reliefs to be done.

Has anyone seen what was actually completed at the weekend yet?

Knowing Bombardier, the software won't be able to use the second line as it had to remain compatible with the 377s or something.

Bombardier changed the design hence the difference. Wasn't changed on a software level as the extra line would require a lot of alterations to work for the software to detect differences between the two PIS types (remember the 377/6 and /7 are the same as the 387s).

Why did Bombardier bother adding an extra line then?

Between the parallel lines
The TL 387s can display a second line of text on the cab destination board. One of the most common ones is Bedford or Brighton "via Redhill". There are others too.

TL units don't have to be backwards compatible with the one line screens like on the 377/6 and /7s (and the software is the same on the 387/2 so either can work each others services if ever needed).

It's sadly under used and is a bit small on the 387s/later 377s. The spacing between lettering is also a bit minimal. The second line should definitely be used for "via xxxxxx" remarks.

No idea.

Unless it is there but not been declared to GWR control! Not seen any mention in any traction updates.

I can remember BR loosing a Mk1 FO in the 1980's and asking if anyone knew where it was. It was found a week later in sidings (Thornton Fields?) near Stratford in a sorry state after being lost for years!

I suppose not as bad as the EE loco power unit that went missing at Stratford Open day the year before but souvenir hunting was bad during 1970's-1980's open days, so bad they left loco's out at open days just for that purpose!

As I said, 387136 is at North Pole and arrived on Sunday. Sometimes people choose not to listen...
Well it was you who reported 137...

But you're reading to much into this sequence of posts. No one said you were wrong about 136, just pointed out other reports that it had arrived on its own, and then FGW_DID said that industry internal systems hadn't initially shown it.

True. Although I do remember seeing 387136 as possibly an eight car unit upon delivery, it was certainly very long for a four car unit. That made me think 387137 got delivered on Sunday night too.

Maybe it look long because translator and/or brake force vehicles were involved? AIUI deliveries by ROG are fully coupled up and use the unit's brakes, (which is supposedly ROG's USP), but Freightliner did the weekend moves presumably using conventional haulage?

It was done by a Freightliner 66 and a barrier waggon between the 66 and the unit(s). I know this as when this is planned from Bletchley, the return is North Pole IEP Depot to Crewe Basford Hall S.S.N. instead of back up to Bletchley T.M.D. which is what the ROG loco's do. Although I'm still pretty sure a single barrier waggon cannot amount to the length of a 4 car 387, so I'm going to say two were delivered on Sunday night.

So what do you think was delivered Monday night then?
