My understanding is that they are a stopgap measure to try and solve a problem that they're having with the new timetable and a lack of capacity.

And to think Bombardier were moaning about a lack of orders a while ago.

Bombardier (well Derby) always complain of lack of orders when someone else gets a big deal. Both the 450/444 and 700 deals were claimed to put them out of business in an attempt to drum up more orders for the UK plant. Now at least they can't use excuse of only UK 'builder'.

Reported in ukmodernEMU yahoo group that the first GW unit is running on the test track at Derby as 387130, with the 6 digit vehicle numbers to match; i.e. 421130, 422130, 423130, 424130.

The 6 units for c2c were reported as being on a three year lease here:

The same article points out that the 68 vehicle (17 unit) long term order for c2c is not due for final delivery until 2019.

As I understand it the 6 387s are off leased when the 17 4-car "franchise obligation" sets come into service. In effect the 387s are an early start for the extra sets, being forced on c2c by passenger complaints after the timetable change fiasco.

Strangely the article refers to them as 'walk-through carriages'. I assume that doesn't mean like class 378s or 700s. Maybe they are saying that the units themselves have end-doors through the cabs, unlike the class 357s currently on the C2C routes.
