To be honest it's a bit more complex than that. Depends on the stock but Bombardier trains in general do have quirks. Panels can be live on Turbostars with no key on, eg. adjacent panels in the same coach on a 171. On Electrostars the panel controls can definitely be live without a key on - obviously a fault but I've found it at least three times. In addition you can use the starter bell with the key off in the first few seconds after the associated local door has closed, which is a design feature not a fault.

I've never been told to take a train out of service due to a fault with a single panel. Multiple ones will be a different matter, and likewise if controls are live but insecure through lack of a lockable door. To the best of my knowledge there are no door release controls on Electrostars which can be left active without a key of some description, as the door panels don't have those, so you're unlikely to be able to break interlock without doing something else.

Panels may be used by conductors by insertion of the relevant key. No provision has been made in the instructions for conductors about the panels on 387s not being able to be used at certain times. If conductors are to operate the train then they would have to be briefed if an active panel, in error or otherwise, could interfere with operation - DOO services can be picked up by conductors and worked from intermediate stops, eg. Gatwick / Dorking / Leatherhead / Selhurst / East Croydon. No traction knowledge requirements have changed from 377s, where an active panel can only interfere with operations when it selects a local door for dispatch. Therefore it is to be assumed that faults and failures can occur with the panels at any point.

They certainly do have quirks! Although I've never been told to take anything out of service funny enough and I've failed many units! That's my decision and mine would be out in those circumstances! I'm sure at my TOC the panels haven't even been opened let alone keyed in so I guess we will never know but if I found one live without it intending on being so it would be detrained :)

A pair of 387s was standing at the Pouparts Junction SB signal, waiting to head on to the BML this morning at around 0905 - presumably on driver training. This is the closest to London that I have seen them so far.

I recall reading that the first Class 387s were due in service between Paddington and Hayes at the start of the new timetable on Mon May 16. Is this still likely to happen ? There doesn't seem to be any crew training in progress yet.

As I've been staying for awhile now don't count on those dates being correct. As is now prove they are wrong.

However on the plus side 216 plus a friend are now at Stewarts Lane getting checked before being ready for service.

Anyone know what diagrams the 387s are working on Gatwick Express?

As far as I know it is still just the 1330 Gtw-Vic & 1415 return and the diagram starting with the 1826 from Vic in the evening.

There are a number of additional diagrams due to start next week subject to a couple of issues resolved

To include some visits to Brighton for the first time in GatEx service, I assume?

It will be interesting to see how commuters react as the 442s are displaced. Thus far, the limited 387/2 GatEx runs have only really captured the core airport traffic.

Not sure those who have 1st Will be all too pleased.

Note a conductor will be required for all 12cars, for the whole journey.

I imagine the plan was always that the trains would be 165 operated until such time that electric units were available, but I imagine GWR are keen to get people trained on electric traction.

Yes, the next batch of diagrams will see 387/2's in service at Brighton, although I have just heard this may now be postponed for a week.

I think most will be pleased as the power points come in handy

leg room is the best on any train I have been on

Yes, I tend to agree. For Standard ticket holders the sockets, WiFi and generally brighter ambiance represent an improvement on the 442s.

I'm sure the reaction amongst First Class commuters will be mixed. The loss of the 442 'armchairs' will be regretted by many.

Last week I went from Blackfriars to Brighton and back on a Thameslink 387. As I am Dutch and my visits to the UK are mostly for trainspotting (as opposed to riding), the 387 was new to me and something I was looking forward to.

Overall I am pretty pleased with the train as well as the ride. The ride was smooth and offered some nice views along the route, the chairs were okay(ish) for the trip I made and it was a nice and bright train. The price was nice too, £ 10.60 for a return (super off-peak) is a bargain!

I had two points of criticism:
- The CIS. Stop talking that much, please!
- The high seat backs, as they blocked my view across the carriage despite being 1m85 tall. :D

Sadly those criticisms can be directed at very many British trains.

I think the 387s will be even better received on the gwr routes as they will bring with them an almighty leap in capacity as well as decent air conditioning

I wonder if first class accommodation will be improved presumably leather seats?

might not be a bad idea to put '1st' on to the upholstery like the 'P' for priority seats rather than relying on paper bibs

will 387/2s work southern trains to london bridge then that currently use 442s from brighton?

I see the guards on these 442s still make use of the guards van

And not just the trains. There's a guard on TPE Edinburgh to Manchester Airport services who never shuts up. She must go on almost 10 minutes at every stop listing all the connections you can get from every stop and so on while I'm just trying to read.

I'm sure the people who are unsure of where to change will appreciate it though.

Apologies if this has already been asked before but does anyone know/have a reasonable guess as to when the first 387's will be transferred to GWR?

Also would these units be repainted into GWR colours or vinyled?

No-one knows currently as the cascade is on hold until further notice.

Likely the first 387s to GWR will be in summer as the 8 it has ordered are about to start being built.

Well the fun and games with 387's is starting.

You see there is no agreement to run 12 cars DOO with Gatwick and Southern drivers. But they have started to be diagrammed, though not getting very far, so far.

Something is hitting the fan....;)

As far as I know, the Class 700's are on their final part of testing before entering service next month, which means the Class 387's will be due for cascading next month to GWR. Driver training has been occurring for existing 166/165 drivers into and out of North Pole Depot, and a fair few drivers are already North Pole competent. The 387's will be delivered in Thameslink White and are due to start services for GWR between Paddington and Hayes & Harlington from Mid May onwards. Whether or not this target will be reached is yet unknown but North Pole Depot is now empty and ready for 387 delivery.

On another note, I have heard that Rail Operations Group have signed a contract to do with GWR 387 delivery and/or repaint movements to/from Wolverton using their fleet of 56's, 47's and 37's. These will be dragged and probably by my guess have more to do with Delivery from Three Bridges to North Pole rather than repainting just yet.

All mentioned above with be dependant on the initial cascade and the Class 700's entering service with Thameslink. As for the new ones being built, these may well be delivered first like Class377 has previously mentioned.

Part of that refurbishment would include removing the 3rd rail shoe as there is no need for them along the GWML correct?

Seems as though some issues have just arisen with 700s testing and the cascade has been halted for now. 378s moving over by mid May seems unlikely.

I thought that the Gatwick Express 387's would cover for the lack of Thameslink 387's as they are being cascaded? GX 387's are already doing lots of Thameslink services which could be because Thameslink 387's are being prepped for GWR despite the issues with the 700?

As far as I am aware, the use of Gatwick Class 387/2s was never planned. Although teething troubles with the Class 700 were inevitable.
