Ive been on a 377/6 but not a 387 as yet, the seats are certainly firm but then as has been said that's meant to be good for posture, I think its case that you will get used to them after a while.

They may be good for posture, but you do get neck ache reading all the blinking posts about them...

Those by others of course, not yours! :D

Yes, I don't have a great problem with the seat backs (although I would rather they were not so high - but that seems to be the latest H&S fad), but the bases do have the give of a park bench.

It's hardly a 'fad'. High-back seats are part of the safety of everybody whether seated or standing, limiting the distance that either passengers or loose objects travel in the event of an impact. Grayrigg would have been much more serious if the anti-H & S clamour had been followed. The alternative is seat belts, - anybody here want them?
Besides, the high backs give head support when not leant forward over reading matter and are part of the healthy posture design.

It's more the hardness of the seat base than the back...Not good when you have piles, haha....

The few with actual conditions that may be aggravated by firmer seating should carry their own cushion as they don't have any guarantee that they may have to use seats that are unsuitable for them.

disagree, i think for a journey of half an hour or more you should expect a well cushioned seat regardless of whether you have a condition, surely?!

I'm a regular 377 commuter on Southern and I always look forward to a 377/6 vice another type with the older seats. Much more spacious and comfortable and I feel the majority of passengers will welcome the 387 with the same seating.

I don't find the seats too bad, and ergonomics are important.

Certainly more comfortable than Standard class in a Pendolino, which leaves me in pain after about forty-five minutes. The same goes for Standard class on East Coast, which is a bizarrely shaped seat.

You lot should all try the seats and legroom at almost every seat on the coaches Megabus use on their overnight M11 services! I have a hunch you'd not be complaining about East Coast and Virgin seats after 8-11 hours on one of those coaches!

But I wouldn't be paying north of £5,000 a year to sit on a Megabus.

From another thread, it seems one of the pairs fell over a bit last night

And they were a pair of 387's too.

And they disgraced themselves at Coulsdon South too, for the best part of 45'.
The units decided they didn't want to recognise each other, and then the egress was operated!

This reminds me, when we were approaching St Pancras, the driver made an announcement on the lines of "We are now approaching St Pancras. If the doors don't open immediately when we come to a stand, please bear with me and I will get them open within a few seconds. These are new trains and we are experiencing a few problems getting them to pick up their location so the doors don't get released"

I won't lie, I was ready for 'These are new trains and we're not quite sure how to work them yet" :P

EDIT: The service in question: http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/L03660/2014/12/20/advanced

Nor would you be getting an ability to travel as many times as you could fit in at speeds up to 100mph in better safety and (even at the moment) a better probability of arriving on time.

They are 'well cushioned' as far as many are concerned. Some clearly have a different opinion, but judging by the trickle of rants on this thread, I doubt that they are of the sort of numbers that they think they are.

fair point but if they are "well-cushioned" then a 319 seat is like a 1000 tog duvet!

That is my experience too. My lower back can hurt at times, so need seats that are good at the lower back position. Not had my back hurt on the 377/6 seats or the Class 450 ones, but have on the 458 seats, as well as the East Coast electric sets. Not travelled Standard Class on a Pendolino.

Here are a few of my attempts at photography - my phone battery died (with 25% supposedly remaining) but I luckily had my camera on me

What I hate about this layout is looking down the carriage and everybody across the aisle is looking at me. Some of the Pacers are like this.

Based on the pictures of First Class a couple of pages ago I really can't imagine the first class passengers being particularly happy with that.. Not even a door to separate the area and exactly the same seats?! It's just going to constantly end up with people sitting in there because they don't even realise it's first class and yet more threads appearing on here with people getting penalty fares for it.. Very bad move.

Good move if it leads to some nice three figure settlements to stay out of court! Good for the TOC that is.

is the door further down the carriage as maybe the 1st class section will be extended when they leave Thameslink?

Also what is going on with the seat pattern? looks very random

Possibly, but having seen how bad first class is now marked on a range of GTR trains I do actually feel a bit sorry for some people who will be caught unawares.

And in the past I'd have had little to no sympathy for people caught, as it would usually be very obvious and those that stayed most likely boasting to others with them (or keeping a constant look out if on their own, a pretty obvious sign).

Now I am seeing people moving out of first class after a short while, whereby they've noticed - and far too late if an RPI was waiting to pounce as soon as the train started moving.

Agreed. This problem never occured on 319s.

To be honest if I was a first class season ticket holder I think I would complain to my local councils trading standards department. A sticker on the window is the only difference between first and standard class.

If FC on most commuter services is to increase the chance of a seat, it's no good if other people don't realise it's first class.

For one thing, if it was more obvious then some people might think 'I might pay for first class next time' and give some nice extra revenue to the TOC.

Otherwise many who might pay the extra will just give up, losing them a lot of extra revenue.

Can anyone outline (linky if possible) how the CRE (Correct Release Enable) works.

I saw posted in another thread they 387s are really accurate. If its GPS based then how is it accurate through the core when other units struggle ? Does it have ERTMS linked in like the 700's will ?

Cheers in advance.

The 387 are more advanced. The CRSE works by deacon's on the track so isn't quite that clever but depends where driver stops.

Will point out that the Electrostars 'struggle' because they allow drivers to open the doors where 319/317 are dumb units that do what told. Electrostars use GPS to work out where they are and in the Core GPS is non existent at some stations.

ERTMS doesn't exist in the Core yet. Nice long block in a few years to commission that.
