I'm interested in finding out a bit more about the workings of 380s out of Edinburgh.

I think it's true that there are Class 380s working towards North Berwick but are there other diagrams too? Are the North Berwick sets on a completely separate diagram or are they tied in with others - such as Glasgow- Airdrie - Bathgate- Edinburgh turns?

North Berwick diagrams are self-contained I believe, aside from the peak extensions via Carstairs to Glasgow.

As you might be able to tell from what I've just said, the only 380s from Waverley are the hourly North Berwick trains (half-hourly Saturdays only, I'm not sure why it's only hourly Sunday-Friday), roughly 2tpd each way to Glasgow via Carstairs, and I think the 1tp2h~ service to Dunbar.

No 380s are booked via Bathgate, that's chiefly 334 operation.

Are some Saturday services still operated by diesels?

Thanks for those updates - much appreciated - but there are still some loose ends!

Do the 380s go back to Glasgow for servicing or can they be serviced locally (Craigentinny?) - and if so, how is it arranged? Do they, for instance, go back after a specific trip and how often are the units exchanged?

Do they go back ECS or are they utilised on a regular service train?

Is there time in the schedule for there to be a unit (or more than one) out of use on the Edinburgh diagrams or does a replacement unit have to be put into the diagram to release the one needing service?

Thanks bnsf734.

Those diagrams are up to 2011 but even so they tell me most of what i wanted to know. The diagrams do include Glasgow Central and there are lots of ECS trips particularly first thing in the morning and last thing at night. You can't tell from the diagrams which units operate them but I think it's a strong likelihood that the Glasgow Central journeys will allow for units to be rostered in and out of the Edinburgh services.

Thanks again.

Those North Berwick services which continue to / from Glasgow, are they just a means of getting 380s to / from Edinburgh or are they a franchise requirement ?

Franchise requirement (being as they're the only services between Carstairs and Edinburgh, amongst other things).

In fact, they'll be increased in the next timetable.

the only 380s from Waverley are the hourly North Berwick trains (half-hourly Saturdays only, I'm not sure why it's only hourly Sunday-Friday)

AFAIK it's like the Hope Valley stopper between Sheffield and Manchester (which runs at twice the frequency on a Saturday to a weekday) - the need for freight paths (and fast longer distance trains) means that the local passenger service is stunted. At the weekend there are just as many fast longer distance services, but a lot less freight, so more "slow" paths for the stoppers (in this case the North Berwick EMUs).

If stations like Mussleburgh weren't on the main line I could see them justifying a "turn up and go" frequency. But since they are constrained by the need for freight/ East Coast/ XC services there's no realistic chance of a significantly better service to the local stations in East Lothian.

There are some services between Glasgow and North Berwick but they are not very frequent, I can remember there (when the 322s worked them) was one that left Glasgow not long after 1500 then there is one in the other direction that past me after 1900 from North Berwick

You won't tell from the Diagrams what works them. They are allocated to a Diagram on a daily basis. As they come off Shields Depot, a unit which works to Ayr/Largs one day could appear at North Berwick the next.
