From an engineering point of view I think aerodynamics come into play with the front design. It looks great to be honest.

I don't think the 322s will be retired, but I think that if Scotrail can get rid of them and run the service with 334s and 318s they would consider it; although they have a slightly lower max speed, it keeps a more uniform fleet that's much cheaper. The 322s must be a royal pain, with those silly services to Glasgow thrice a day. It would, of course, depend on the timetables for North Berwick runs if this was possible. But FCC could definitely make use of the extra stock, and I'm sure other TOCs would argue that they could as well.

I think the extra 10mph is needed because they're running on the ECML for most of the route. I think the max linespeed on the sections it runs is only 110mph, but that's still 10mph above what the 322s capable of, so being a stopper that can only do 90mph could cause even more issues for the NXEC and XC services behind it.
The other thing with the 334s is that they're only 3 cars, compared to the 322's 4 cars. Having been in Waverley when the shuttle's been departing in the afternoons before, it can get pretty full with 4 cars, so I think there could be some issues if it were to go down to only 3.

The tapering of the bodyside has a 313/314/315/507/508 look to it. (CUT) the builder might've designed this train with those routes in mind too. Those classes are all up for replacement fairly soon, so "another" type of train will be needed.

If we ever get these on the GN route into Moorgate, then I will happily let FCC close that branch too and use the Northern Line exclusively. :D

Reads on through thread: Wow, it's like the Muppet Show around here (Think Statler and Waldorf)

the 380s are for use on the glasgow to ayr, largs, ardrossan, gourock, wemyss bay and gourock routes and when it opens the glasgow airport route. this will displace the 34s which will go to the north side to provide the extra trains required when airdrie bathgate opens.
re visibility of DOO monitors on platforms these units and the 334s have in cab monitors with cameras on the side of each coach. the monitors can be seen on the right of the driving position

Personally, I think it look fabulous. I can't help feeling sometimes on here that if it doesn't look like a HST, it isn't worthy of the railway.

Hold up, I disagree with you there. As I do with everyone who thinks this 380 looks good, but I especially disagree with the comment I've emboldened.

As one of the resident HST nutters on here, I declare that much to be poppycock. From a personal point of view, there's plenty of stuff out there which is aesthetically pleasing. A primary example being the 390. I also like the 158s, but that's possibly because I grew up with them. I won't roll off a list of aesthetically pleasing types of train, because I just can't be bothered.

One thing I will say is that whilst most classes don't look half as good as a HST to me, this new class 380 is just worse than all of them!

How long does it run at 100mph for, though? Would the decreased speed make that much difference? I'd say it spent most of the time at less that 90mph when I was last on it.

And, yes you'd have 3 cars on some trains. But you'd also be capable of having 6 cars; that looks like an improvement to me!

I think it looks better in 'model' form than it did when I saw the drawings of it last year, hopefully it will suit the passengers and companies needs to serve its purpose well unlike some of the rolling stock we've been subjected to in recent years.

I think the speedo is a bit of a non-issue really all speedos have a higher marked speed than the train will actually go (14x/15x show 100mph on the speedo)

Overall, a very nice train. I had a shot of the interior, but deleted it because it came out far too blurry.

Quite for what practical reason the front corridor is designed like that is beyond me :?

To make it streamlined and cut through the air better (in theory), I would say. The corridor will just tilt forwards when connected (I guess!). ;)

It's a bit wierd, I don't know whether I like it or not...I'll flip a coin....:)
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
The coin dictated that I like it! Yes, it is a bit ugly, but it looks pretty cool...I wouldn't say it was the ugliest thing in the world either, that's a Class 442 *runs and hides from all Southerners* :p.

I'll have to travel more on the Ayrshire Coast and Inverclyde lines when these are introduced.

It was never an issue, just an observation :)

As for 14x and 15x they have been known to go above 75mph when coupled with a 158 (yes, I know they shouldn't). Say you achieve 80mph that is 20mph less than the speedo max, whereas these units are (we are assuming) 100mph units with no chance of coupling to anything else faster, leaving a 40mph gap on the speedo, hence the original observation :)

How exactly are the corridor connections going to work being on such a slant?

Well I don't think it takes a rocket scientist ro figure out that the top of the connection will push forward :)

I've seen it in person today. All doubts I've had have now gone; I love this train!

The exterior is different looking, but I think it's quite striking! It differs from a typical train, though, so I imagine it'll draw a lot of criticism from that front. But I like it, and the livery looks fantastic on it!

Inside, however, is spectacular (for Scotrail, anyway!). Besides, it's what passengers care most about. The 2+2 seating is great in comparison to the 3+2 arrangement on the current 334s. The Scotrail reps on the mock-up said that people don't use the middle seat, so it was decided that the trains would be more comfortable with 2+2 seating. The laptop/phone plugs are a fantastic feature, and the tables for all passengers will be welcomed; 334s have not tables whatsoever! And there's good luggage space for Glasgow and Prestwick Airport passengers.

I'm looking forward to seeing these enter passenger service; and from what I've heard they've been getting positive reviews about the mock up. These look set to be a success! (Barring, of course, technical issues).

I think the 334s may get a major refit, to bring them inline with the 380s with mini tables and power sockets as well...due to them going onto the new helensburgh to edinburgh services.

Fantastic! Do you know of any plans to install WiFi perchance? Just seems like a natural follow-on from the power sockets. And it would be very useful for Edinburgh services in particular.

When the 334s go to the North Clyde line for Edinburgh, will they also still operate on the Argyle Line? I'd hate to loose them.

They'll tilt forward; you can see the hinges at the bottom.

I doubt mintona was doubting that. Just look at the farce of the 458 coridor connectors. The reason they were rubbish? They are at an angle so take an age to set up. Thus impracti al.

But these are considerably simpler than the 458s. The 458s are also completely hidden when not in use and need to be pushed out for use. This isn't much different to coupling a 350, except that you'd need to push the top forward. All in all, it shouldn't take that much longer. Definitely shouldn't be a 458 style farce, anyway.

Well, with these things they may be ok..... I suppose I'll get used to them, not living anywhere near Scotland anyway

Personally, I really like them; a new, fresh look on the network, and a slightly unusual one. But I like the sharp edges on the front, with the lights slightly recessing into the body at the bottom of them, and the 'jaw' jutting out below giving it an agressive look that other stock lacks

They don't look too bad, except for the light clusters...

Can we have a few down here, would be great for Portsmouth runs.

Surely, though, standard 350s (perhaps with a different seating arrangement- but that's hardly difficult/expensive) would have been a cheaper option? The sloping front isn't going to do much for aerodynamics, and 350s happily do 100mph. The new design seems to be just a case "being different" for the sake of doing it, not to any real purpose.

There is the slight taper of the sides, which could be because of the lines they might end up running on, and the 350s don't have that, so maybe that was a consideration.

Also, when they are built and in service, the previous design will be going on 10 years old, so it's nice to have a new design :)
