There was a fitter on there. 8 minute delay at Tottenham and then went on it's way. I jumped on at Tottenham on it's way back into London. Really nice ride.

So, are we saying the service was caped, or they smoothly brought a 317 up from Liv St, coupled and continued?

Oops, I forgot, they can't do that because they're not compatible!

1 late start, few minutes door delay at Tottenham Hale, back to one down at Stortford, nothing earth shattering. Certainly feel too have a bit of go about them, and not bad at all inside well up there with 350/1s I thought. The seats are the more upright 377 style ones but with much more padding - although the padding is shaped so will no doubt be subject to personal opinions.

Seen here at Liv St http://redcow.fotopic.net/p69265941.html

It looks great and I'm pleased that the service ran pretty well.

One thing I'm curious about; do these units have plug or pocket doors and if plug, how's the dwell time impact?

Door problems with 005, eh? Now there's a surprise.

I'm not sure how an 8 minute delay at Tottenham (where it no doubt held up everything behind it) and the need to have a fitter onboard can possibly be classified as a "success".

Plug, you can tell in the picture, as if it was sliding the windows wouldn't be so close to the doors (like a 317) or they would be further in the bodyshell (378)

You're right. Given it's Bombardier, I'd put it more as 'HUGE success' for such a short delay.

I'm absolutely astonished it didn't catch fire and take the whole operation with it, such seems to be the norm for finely crafted Bombardier products.

Colleagues said they saw two in a few minutes at Whittlesford yesterday evening- one southbound paused at the station (ie made a "dummy" stop), the one northnbound crawled through the station "so slow you could count the seats", causing their train to be fifteen minutes late.

Mindyou, I took a train this morning (317) and the doors stuck closed for five minutes or so at Whittlesford. Driver had to phone the engineers to get advice on how to sort it(according to what he told us over the tannoy). Isn't just the new trains that have problems.

317s are usually fixed with a hammer or a kick aren't they?

The 379 will probably need a shutdown, format, firmware update and software reinstall!

That may well be what the fitters on the phone told the driver, I have no way of knowing.

Are the training runs to Cambridge at fixed times?

It didn't go quite as badly as it might have done, perhaps?

True. The unit could have failed requiring the service to be cancelled. However, I just knew something would go wrong last night.

Nope. There are bugs in the software relating to the SDO, to the extent that even the units on driver training runs have travelling fitters with laptops logging the faults and carrying out updates.

That said, it does appear that they have modified the doors in some manner for the driver training runs. Talking to a colleague today it appears that it is currently not possible to give a door release. All pressing the buttons does is to active the CCTV DOO monitors.

The Cl379's are currently subject to speed restrictions due to concerns about clearance. Whittlesford is particularly severe with a 5mph restriction, though there are other slightly less severe restrictions at Broxbourne P2 (I think) and the back platform at Bishops Stortford. They are also currently barred from Stoke Newington.

However, I'm not sure the Cambridge was necessarily delayed for 15 minutes due solely to the Cl379. There have been delays as a consequence of the driver training runs, but nothing that bad. I wonder if the Cambridge was delayed anyway and so the Cl379 was routed out ahead of it.

It depends. If it's just one door stuck closed I'd be inclined not to bother, but if it's stuck open it will need attention. Likewise if you can only get a partial door release and just 3 out of 4 obstruction lights, as maybe something has tripped and would need resetting.

Are the training runs to Cambridge at fixed times?

They do seem to be because there are specific driver training diagrams, and over the past three mornings I've been passing Cl379's at the same times and places. However, these workings are flexible so I wouldn't like to guarantee it.

O L Leigh

Compare it to the issues the 377/5 had on the Thameslink network. Or the fact the first 377/2 in passenger service went tits up at Farringdon and ended up running fast from Blackfriars to Brighton!

I'd say the first 379 trip went well!

I have a question that somebody might know the answer to. I saw a 379 in the flesh for the first time at Bishops Stortford today and noticed that there are some strange looking louvred grilles, just on one vehicle (at least I think so, I could only see one side) on the driving car at the opposite end to the 1st Class.

Does anyone know what these are for and why they only seem to be fitted to one vehicle?

(Sorry, I didn't get chance to photograph it before it pulled away).

Is this at window level? If so, it will be the luggage rack/trolley store area at the end of the vehicle.

No, it's about half way between the top edge of the windows and the cant rail, in about four locations, just on the one vehicle.

It could be that the other three vehicles have the same louvres on the other side and that the end car I saw it on had them on the side I could see because the vehicle was turned the opposite way to the other cab end.

Still doesn't explain what they are though.

I've just rechecked the photos I've taken of these units and there appear to be louvres on all coaches, but only on one side as you observed. However, if you look down one side of these units the louvres seem to alternate with one coach showing, one not, one showing and one not.

I don't know what they're for, but there appears to be one above every window. I would be surprised if the driver training programme explains their purpose either, but my suspicion is that they probably have something to do with the heating or ventilation.

Thanks for that. I wondered if they may be present on the side I couldn't see, and therefore be fitted to one side of each vehicle. In 379005 they are definitely on one side on the first three vehicles and the other side on the fourth.

Actually, I've just checked some other photos of Electrostars and it looks like they're fitted to all Classes from 375 onwards.

Any pictures of what you mean? I have tried googling but all the pictures I see are from a distance.

The windows don't look quite as flush as from a distance!

And why is the open door button in the middle (almost) of the two doors? I thought everyone in the business knew that you put the buttons to the edge (on plug doors) or on the side (sliding doors) so people wanting to board stand to the edge - which helps allow people to alight.

Such a small thing, but makes a big difference! This button encourages some idiot to stand right in the middle.

(Sorry you're now being bombarded by questions - bet you wish you hadn't posted the photo now!!)

No they don't. They still stand right in front of the doors irrespective of where the button is.

^True.

O L Leigh that question wasn't specifically aimed at you, just anyone that might know :)
