I've noticed the 377s, and probably the other aircon electrostar variants, have 1 hopper window per car that the gaurd can open. However, I've never actually seen one open despite having been on several journeys where the air con failed and the train is sweltering over the years. Is it something they are told only to use in proper emergencies like strandings?

Guards or on board supervisors will normally only open them on request or if they are asked to by fitters. I assume the air-conditioning status of 377s can be monitored remotely so when a fault is reported then someone may unlock a window!
Really the advice is if the air con has failed you should move to another carriage.

As a regular user of Southern 377s I have seen these windows open on individual coaches very occasionally on trains in service. Fortunately the air-conditioning on the Electrostars is generally reliable. There are two opening windows per carriage side - so four in total per coach.
