Class 377/387 coupled.

Evening all. Today I had the pleasure of seeing a 377/387 coupled at Selhurst. It got me thinking is this the first time this has happened? I haven’t seen it before.

Whilst uncommon, this isn't the first time it's happened. the two classes are not allowed to run in service together, but can couple to rescue/run out of service. Does remind me of the time someone on depot would try to run a 387 in the middle of a 12 car move from one depot to another for wheel attention, and in putting it in the middle of the consist it was hoped the driver might not notice as whilst they are effectively the same train from a maintenance perspective, they are seperate on a drivers traction knowledge (a 387 is as similar to a 377 as each sub class of 377 is to eachother!)

This was 387 217 + 377 417 on 5B83 from Lovers Walk to Selhurst.

A few years back there was a booked working in the evening working of a green 377, TL 387 and another 377 as a 12 car. Brighton to Lovers walk.

I seem to recall someone saying that the 377/6s and /7s are basically 387s in disguise.

I had a scan through old threads, and was reminded that some time before appearing as 387s they were usually referred to as 377/8s. Someone suggested the new number was just to differentiate the higher top speed, but they were otherwise compatible.

A couple of months ago, 377101 failed near Pevensey and was rescued by a 387. A photo of this is shown on the link below:

They were classified 377/8 at ordering, but reclassified during the build.
