Class 377/3 New Bogies?

Went to Redhill Today and saw a departing 377 321 had new bogies installed?

When did this happen and why?

Should be a quick thread just wondering why

It looks the same at those used on the 377/6 or 377/7

I suspect these will be overhauled bogies fitted as part of Routine Maintenance.

They will be overhauled to the specification for the vehicle type. Bogies have a finite life and will be changed for overhauled bogies at a specified mileage.

Remember, the 377/3's are nearly 20 years old now. Bogies need to be maintained; properly stripped down etc.

What used to happen was that a unit would come into works, be lifted off its bogies and a ready-overhauled set wheeled in to replace them so that a unit doesn't spend too long out of traffic. It's bogies would then be overhauled and donated to another unit, and so on. Don't know if this happens today or if units just stay in works for the duration of their bogie maintenance

Changing the subject I’ve seen a few of the /6 and /7 with new bogies now. It must be that time that they are due their first bogie overhaul. I’m assuming it’s their first.

Bogie changes are often carried out at the same depot that routine maintenance is carried out. As you state the bogies removed are usually sent to a location where they are overhauled and an overhauled already at the depot set fitted to miniseries down time. From my knowledge of other units, the bogie overhaul interval is around 500,000 miles so I would suggest this mean bogie change ever 4 to 5 years at most. The fleet will already have had several bogie changes.
For information the bogie change was usually referred to a C4 overhaul and for many fleets other equipment such as brake pneumatic equipment and drawgear would be changed for overhauled items at the same time.

Yes I saw one yesterday with identical bogies to that 377/3. They are relatively new (7,8,9 years) so Yes probably first time or even second.

There are usually some spare bogies ordered with a fleet (and if any get withdrawn due to accidents, the bogies may be recovered).

If you go back to BR days, when all the Southern EMUs were overhauled every few years at Eastleigh, one of the first jobs was to separate the bodies and put them on transport bogies (lightweight small wheeled versions), the bogies went to different part of the works, where all components needing overall or replacement were removed, there was even a section to rewind the motors if required.

Meanwhile bodies had all the slam doors removed, all seats taken out for reupholstery etc. Everything came back clean or repainted
