Class 375 - PIS Announcement

Hi guys! I was on a Class 375 one day and saw on the information screen onboard the train "Please listen to station and on train announcements." I've seen it plenty times before, but is this message put up when the PIS isn't working properly or when there is a fault on the PIS system?

Same on 377s. Could be those reasons, or a change to the booked calling pattern: stopping short, skipping stations, no detachment, detachment not at the usual place. Any number of reasons really.

As Paul said, it's most common during disruption, when there's a calling pattern change or alteration of the service. The system will just be set to "please listen to station and..." and the guard will have to use the PA to make the announcements instead of the auto announcer. I'm sure I've seen it a few times too when the PIS has 'got stuck', I.e still thinks we're approaching a station we left ages ago, but can't be sure about that.

I should imagine it'll also be shown for some faults with the PIS, such as not being able to access the database or the PIS not starting properly. Some PIS faults are more serious though and will just cut all displays, so it won't show anything at all on the destination at the front, on the side or inside.

I was at Clapham junction the other day and the 377 said please listen to announcements on the side and the info screens had got jammed on please stand clear, next train does not stop here. Not very helpful when both break together.

I was on a morning peak service to Cannon Street last year which just showed "London Cannon Street" as a static message on the displays, both inside and outside. The guard had to make manual announcements all the way to London.

Well, if you're aboard when the 'destination' is selected, there is an accompanying automated announcement which also says "Please listen to station and on-train announcements" too. Apart from that, usually the guard takes over and announces where necessary.

The train now doesn't know where it's stopping, and the platform boards at Clapham go "Oh, this is train 9X99, it's not stopping here, better warn passengers to stand clear"... cue confusion!

With the system at Clapham Junction being run by South West Trains, most likely just down to SWT not adding the extra stop onto their system.

If the route code is correct and functioning making an additional stop doesn't (usually) affect the PIS, on MITRAC it'll display "Off Route" until it gets to the next (correct) station on the list and carry on as normal.

If as mentioned it gets stuck, or no code is available for the route then the listen to announcements one is supposed to be selected. Sometimes the database goes screwy and won't give the selectable messages (even though line of route ones still often work) this pops up a fault message on MITRAC which when you acknowledge feels the need to remind you after a little while. It's as helpful (annoying) as if a toilet out of use message kept on coming up.

Nope, it was late at night so hardly any trains around. Was around 1am but the screens were showing the 02:09 to three bridges as the next train. The next should have been the 01:09 to brighton and when that got near the screen changed to stand back, so it was a normal timetabled service so not sure what happened there.
