Yes, there are luggage racks on the units,
but their locations are
quite complex.
At the body end of each vehicle are MCB cupboards that contain circuit breakers and electronics, but only on one side. Opposite them, are the luggage rack sections. If you look at the end of a carriage, the MCB cupboards are on the right and the luggage on the left. You can tell because the luggage racks will either be open (in which case there is space on the floor and one shelf for luggage) or locked closed with a blue shutter and the MCB cupboards have white doors. There are exceptions though, such as in the 2nd and 3rd carriages where there are toilets, which are also on the left hand side.
To make it easier for you, I've drawn it out...
- the red crosses are the cabs, MCB cupboards and areas not used
- the blue crosses are the toilets
- the green boxes
should be where the luggage racks are.
(If it's a 3 car train on the day, then ignore car 2 on the diagram above)
However, a word of warning, many are locked shut with the shutters
ml mentions for a variety of reasons (people often sit in them or vandalise them).
I'd recommend using the ones in the 1st or 4th carriages. As an alternative, if they are locked, there is plenty of luggage space around the disabled toilet area, permitting there are no disabled passengers that need the area. Or, as I say to people with smaller cases, they'll fit nicely under the bay of seats closest to the doors (i.e just the other side of the glass screens between the doors and seating areas). Because there is no row behind, there's a bit more room underneath.
