Class 37 Tractive Effort Curves

Hi,

Does anyone have a tractive effort vs speed curve for a Class 37 locomotive. The continuous rail hp looks a bit low at 1250 and I suspect the maximum rail hp will be nearer 1350HP

I don't have the curves, but looking at the specifications of other Type 3 locomotives I've a feeling that the BR specification was for 1,250 horsepower at the rail - it's the same for the Beyer-Peacock and Brush Type 3s, despite their having 1,700hp and 1,600hp engines respectively. The BRCW Type 3 is a bit different as it was specified by Southern Region rather than as a national standard, but it still kicks out 1,215hp.

In actuality, the 12CSVT engine in a Class 37 can be rated at 2,000hp, and the traction motors uprated to give the same power at the rail as a Class 40. This was supposedly offered as an option on the last batches, but BR declined - which supports the view that BR had thought long and hard about what they wanted from a Type 3, and 1,250hp at the rail was it.

Hello

I'm starting some research into the Class 37 and wondered if anyone knew the length, width, height and weight of the English Electric 12CSVT engine used in them?

Also, does anyone have any docs detailing what the engine power is (ideally engine speed and torque values) for each of the notches?

Hello all,

I've found the dimensions and weight of the 12CSVT via documents posted on the http://www.preservedthumpers.com/ page.

I've also found identified an article in the Diesel Railway Traction journal Sept 1962 page 351 by R F Tufnell called "English Electric V Engines" which I think has some further useful information

There are also some useful documents on http://www.locodocs.co.uk/

My remaining question are now just relating to the power controller. As far as I can tell at the moment there aren't any notches. It seems to be a continuous / not stepped lever. A BR Class 37 driver training video refers to the lever as increases engine RPM

So, presumably the EE 12CSVT isn't operating as a fixed speed gen-set. Rather moving the power level is increasing engine RPM (the torque and power as it climbs in RPM may or may not be linear I suppose).

Lastly, in terms of OTMR (and going with the idea that power lever increases engine speed), what does it log for a Class 37? If there are no notches does it log just engine speed then?


If anyone has any info or corrections on how the engine is run in a Class 37 then it would be great to hear from you!
