Which means that 524 (DMOC A and TSO) and 540 (DMOC B) are the only one left in the UK (which I know they're in preservation at EKR)

There remains a question mark about the undamaged driving car from 365526. Last reported as being at Wolverton, there doesn’t seem to be any record of it being disposed of. From what I recall it was sold, so would not be part of the current disposal programme.

That said, it may well have been quietly sent for scrap at some point, or indeed simply stripped down on site.

It would be rather ironic for this vehicle to outlive the rest of the fleet.

I just had another thought. Might the works have used it either as a testbed for bodywork repair techniques, or maybe a general training facility for apprentices etc?

A Paint testing vehicle sounds plausible - Bombardier / Alstom has a Mk3 RFM at Ilford for such training, before letting it's apprentices loose on bigger and better stock (3417 being an example of this).

Just had a quick look on Google Earth and it shows what appears to be an NSE liveried Networker at Wolverton that doesn't have a cab shell and looks like it's been used to test cutting roof vents into the body structure...

Hmm. That very strange, although I think since the Potters Bar accident back in 2002, that 526, just stay there until one car use for training and the others scrapped?

Without a doubt that’s 526.

One hundred per cent 37884 cerbreus with 365525 to Newport Simms for scrap at oxford Parkway.
However creating such a networker scene never to be repeated 37884 with 365525 in first. With 165009 165013 entering just after other for scrap into distance at station. .
Ie networker family the first to be built remains in service.
With the last type to enter going for scrap.

Please explain what you mean by:
  • ”Networker scene never to be repeated”
  • ”165009 165013 entering just after other for scrap into distance at station”

Basically the two types off the original networker units together ie from the 165 465 365 network southeast family. Etc from the good old British rail. days.
NOT often you see a class 165 turbo parked up alongside a class 365 unit.
Both stopped next to each other in the station. Class 365 was Newport bound.
Whilst the class 165 was London bound.
With the class 365 in first. Then came the class 165 for London. However such a ironic scene that the 165 which came into service 1991 is still going nice and strong yet the 365 opposite the 165 ie
The final type off the 165 465 365 networker series built from the network southeast era ie in 1996 the final units to be built was going for scrap a lot earlier than its other counterpart opposite. And five years younger too.

This makes sense now, thank you.

I suppose the last time that a 365 and 165 or 166 might have been seen together would have been at Ilford.

I suspect the Metro-Cammell Class 465s will be next to be scrapped, unless there is a very urgent need for them at Southeastern and somebody spends big money to refurbish them.

I imagine that the Turbos have the advantage of being diesel powered, thus plenty of versatility. If they were powered in such a way that limited their options when the 387s came into GWR (very hypothetical parallel universe), they could have had the same fate as the 365s now, but instead they've largely been cascaded somewhere else to do the same job where they're better than what's already in place. The 465/466s won't be cascaded anywhere else with their 3rd rail limitations, but have the advantage of their fleet size being so large that complete withdrawal is a tall order, so is drawn out in effect for now.

365s though had both limited operating areas and a relatively small fleet size; I reckon were the 365 fleet 2x the size it actually was they'd have lasted longer, even if that meant a cascade somewhere else. "Safety in numbers" seems to apply well to rolling stock.

Interesting that 3 carriages of a 465 are parked close to it in this scene as well, and what looks like 1 carriage of a 375 just behind.

Same here. Thinking about that myself with the 4652 series. However as well more interestingly the chiltern turbo alongside at Oxford Parkway was also the very first off the turbos to be built and enter service around 1991. Way ahead off the gwr turbos that might have also been the case around reading or didcot Parkway on the Belmont yard moves.

Thank you hst43102 for the update,I meant to say I lived in Cambridge until 2006 which then would have covered the smiley trains, newbie error lol
No worries! They were in service for a while in NSE livery with the "smiley faces" - which looks very odd to me!

I looked at a few videos from 2017-2021 showing the aerial view of wolverton works. DMOC 65919 isn't there.

The smiley face mod (before and after) is my very first railway memory from childhood.

Any news yet on 506 and 536?
Will go for scrap due course.
Awaiting on another path to be rebooked to Newport Simms.
506 and 536 could also need some work done to them to make them move.
Due to them not being able to do so last Friday. Most likely will depart in the next couple or so weeks.
