Hello,

Just a quick question: why does the 365 sound like something from Alstom, even though it was built by ABB?

Because they have GEC-Alsthom traction motors - Four GEC-Alsthom G354CX per DMCO.

ABB never provided traction motors of their own that I know of until the ADTranz days - the 1992 tube stock and 465s both used Brush motors, and the 365s GEC Alsthom. I'm going to assume that this was down to the fact that the designs came about under BREL, and at the time of conception, ABB weren't involved. The 365 was basically an extension of the design of the 465, which came under BREL first, and the same is true of the 1992 stock (spawned off the 1986 stock).

As far as I know, the ADtranz rolling stock did use traction equipment from within the group.

And of course there are some common parts used across the groups too - I can't remember where I read it as it was a while ago but the 1996 stock used on the Jubilee Line uses similar components derived from the 465 Networkers, Whilst the ''supposedly'' earlier 1995 stock on the Northern Line uses the Alstom ''Onix'' derived system which has later gone onto use with the Juniper and Pendolino Fleets.

I know it's a quote from Wikipedia but it does give some technical information.
1995 stock uses Alstom's "Onix" three-phase insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) drive, 1996 stock three-phase induction motors fed from a single-source inverter using a gate turn-off thyristor (GTO), derived from those on Class 465 Networker trains.

Meanwhile of course ABB was later subsumed into Adtranz & Bombardier, and sources it's traction motors from the former ABB factory in Sweden, Whilst the 1992 stock design lives on in the 2009 stock - although that has Bombardiers 'Movia' package.

It may be a misleading clue, but you can kind of tell this just by sound...
