Having not read this thread for a couple of days, I had been hoping to read some good news that the 345s had now started. Sadly not. I'd made sure I had Bank Holiday Monday off specifically to go to London for these and much more, however it looks more likely I'll be off to work. The boss will be happy!

I recall seeing a YouTube comment from Geoff Marshall earlier this week (but I forget which day and what video sadly) stating that the latest he'd heard was an estimate of 31st May but I don't know where that information originated.

With the swt 707s they planned it for a bank hol introduction of one unit, so if any problems it would minimise disruption (or that was the plan until the ffm had to be reset). Same done with 345s would be a good idea I'd say (next Mon), but I've a feeling that could be too soon.

Out of interest can anyone think of a case where they set a date for the introduction of new units and they actually came in service before that date?

31st of May probably makes sense, that way they can still say it's the end of May and it gives them all long as possible.

There is no TfL rail service on Sunday or Monday so unfortunately that isn't possible.

Well at least we know when the new trains definitely will not be carrying passengers... but is it that the GEML will be closed or just that TfL will not be running trains?

I ask because if the route itself is still open then test trains might still be operated.

According to national rail, it has now resumed.

Spring Bank Holiday
A full weekend service has now resumed between London Liverpool Street and Shenfield.

Timetable changes for that haven't made it into RTT yet, still down for buses on Sun/Mon. The service operates on Saturday but only as far as Stratford.

Definitely no test trains will be running this weekend. The route is pretty much shut down between Liverpool Street and Billericay/Ingatestone.

When are they due to start to be used for test trains along the whole CrossRail line (all branches)?

As far as I know the line dates haven't changed:

May 2017 - introduction of class 345 for TfL Rail
May 2018 - introduction of class 345 for Heathrow Connect
December 2018 - opening of Abbey Wood to Paddington
May 2019 - opening of Shenfield to Paddington
December 2019 - opening of Paddington to Reading, full service introduced

I apologise things didn't go well with the last set on info I gave you guys.

I've now been told otherwise that it has been altered to now apparently run on Tuesday 30th May as the first trip. I got told it's now the 0947 departure off Liverpool Street but I don't know the final destination (it sounds like a Gidea Park trip if I am being truthfully honest) and I'm not sure if it will resume service later that day.

The delay is due to 'political interference' with the unions (I'm wondering if this is anything to do with the whole Heathrow access agreement feud).

I hope I don't let you guys down again this week - let's hope for the best. I'll try get more info when I can.

I don't think for a minute anyone here holds you responsible for delays to the programme :P Thanks for the info!

So taking the place of this run?

Yeah I think so, it seems for the first trip they don't want to put it on an actual diagram just in case the teething issues act up and cause problems during the PM peak, hence they might only do one return trip and then start doing regular diagrams later on in June. Obviously if 'political issues' are still ongoing then it will be cancelled at short notice. I will try be there for the first trip and enlighten you ASAP if it is actually in service on Tuesday.

The programme is that for every 1 345 that enters service, 2 315s will be withdrawn. Each month, two new 345s will enter service with 4 315s until all 44 315s are decomissioned.

Is it looking likely that a 345 will enter service tomorrow?

I can't see any STPs put into RTT yet.

Does anyone know who voices the DVA on these units?

I'm not too sure. I heard a rumour it was Emma Hignett as 'she is the voice of all things TfL' now (having done iBus, London Overground and some one-off announcements elsewhere such as the DLR). However Sarah Parnell (voice of the 2009 and S-stock) is quite popular with TfL, so you can't rule her out.

Ideally I'd want Julie Berry back for another generation on TfL's trains. She's got a very well spoken voice and it's more professional than the other two that I have mentioned.

My favourite would be Julie Berry, as her voice is excellent, but Parnell would be good too.

Hignett IMHO would be a disaster as her voice is very monotone and boring, and doesn't flow nicely at all (especially on the Overground"

Just saw a supposedly well-informed guy from Bombardier on the BBC's "The Fifteen Billion Pound Railway" refer to these trains as "the largest length trains you'll probably see on London Underground for a long while..." arrggghh

he also later refers to them as a "tube" arrggghh

As wrong as that is, to joe public it's effectively true. It's on the tube map, it goes in a tunnel through the centre of London and interfaces with underground lines at stations that have no other NR presence (e.g. Bond Street). To all intents and purposes of those using it in the core section, it's a tube line. Much moreso than Thameslink or especially London Overground would be.

As far as the DVA is concerned, I think I'd prefer Parnell or Hignett just because pretty much everything uses Julie Berry these days, but there's a good reason for that - hers is the most professional sounding voice. Parnell is fine, but Hignett's announcements I agree aren't quite up to standard, though a lot of that really has to do with how the services she announces have been programmed, rather than the voice actor herself. The LO announcements are mainly so frustrating as they are far too long, repeat information that doesn't need repeating, and so on and so forth. Assuming the 345s are programmed sensibly, any of those three voices would do.

I'd love Celia Drummond to do it but I think that is unlikely!

It has it's roots in a metropolitan overground railway (in the east) but to all intents and purposes, it will be another "tube" line in spirit, style and operation.

Look at the Central line - starts on land in Essex, goes under London, comes out the other side on land. And is on the tube map. And is not about the end to end journey, more about of the millions of short journeys nearer the centre.

The Elizabeth line - starts on land in Essex, goes under the middle of London and comes out the other end on land. And it will be on the tube map. Also all about the smaller hop-on/hop-off journeys nearer the centre rather than end to end longer journeys.

And someone said to me the other day: "You're (as in Shenfield) going to be on the tube map soon!" So it's obviously a tube line!! :D

After what TfL did to the Northern line announcements, no thanks. Again, no problem with the voice actor, but it's got to be programmed correctly.

Did you tell them we're already on the tube map? :s

Yeah, but it's not a "proper" tube line yet. Still feels too much like the old GA metro stoppers at the moment. The tunnel opening will be the tipping point. These things matter. ;)

The Northern line announcements were only a disaster because they strung old announcements with new ones! These announcements would all be new, wouldn't they?
