I stand corrected, one of the diagrams was still operational I discovered (I didn't see the unit but apparently one was in service westbound from 6pm this evening), but none of the units I passed Eastbound between 6:20 and 6:40 were anything other than 315s - there should normally be two in-service 345s in there. Unusually for peak time I think I counted five 345s in the depot at Ilford.

The 16:36, 16:50 and 17:17 off Liverpool St were 345s today, the 16:50's return trip (17:32 off Gidea Park) was cancelled due to a fault on 345007.

Network Rail has nothing to do with it!

Technically not true, they have everything to do with its getting on and off, and running on, the parts of the existing national rail network.

However in the tunnel it is as you point out Crossrail, my mistake.

I believe the failure was 2W29, so yes, most likely. 2W52 was absent this evening which was concealed among the chaos caused by the fatality at Ingatestone, but probably related.

Something I noticed this evening waiting at Gidea Park to transfer to the Shenfield service behind, to lock the vehicle doors and take the train out of service, rather than press a button high up on the outer wall of the vehicle adjacent to the gangway connection like on most units, the platform staff were simply holding the door open buttons in for five seconds. Someone please tell me this only works after it's been enabled by the driver. Surely passengers wouldn't be able to trigger it if they (accidentally or otherwise) did the same?

S Stock has the same feature, and yes it has to be activated from a cab.

I'm really surprised that carriage doors can't be shut and locked from a remote fob in this day and age. Driver walks through train from front, empty carriage? Bleep.

Good, that's as I would expect, but one does wonder sometimes
I agree in principle with remote locking, but seeing what can happen with that technology in practice with cars, it's probably best they don't. The impacts of spurious signals causing doors to release/lock by themselves or fail to release when expected doesn't bear thinking about. Unnecessary complexity really, this process seems to work well enough.

More likely platform staff and I think you can imagine the mess when the fob stops working, or is lost, or is the fob for the wrong unit. And wouldn't it be tempting not to check each carriage for people (and lost property or suspect packages) if you could just press a button?

May as well just get the driver to count to ten and assume everyone got off and shut down from the cab!

Even worse, imagine the complaints on here if it went wrong! :)

Wasn't that the instruction which caused lengthy industrial action on the Bakerloo Line a little while back? Drivers were basically told not to check their trains or wait for someone to do it, but to flash the saloon lights, make an announcement and then go into the sidings.

One of them caused a fair amount of disruption yesterday and I believe was listed as a 'traction fault', the one from the day before (same diagram but not necessarily the same unit) was 'brake fault', beyond that I can't say unless someone on here has any insider knowledge.

A friend of mine travelled on one today. They were not that impressed. Said the seats were rock hard and they felt very uncomfortable after just 15 minutes on board. They did not mention anything else about them as that was their overwhelming feeling, discomfort. They travel regularly on the Circle Line so are used to the newer tube stock which is essentially the same layout but with more forgiving seats.

The S stock seats are definitely softer, without a doubt. I'm not sure about 378s but they may be a little softer too. The transverse seats are tolerable but the longitudinal ones are definitely about the hardest seats there have been on LU stock.

I won't go into too much detail, but this feature isn't quite working as planned at the moment. I must admit, I prefer the old fashioned porter buttons at the end of the carriages. I'm not looking forward to the time when I may have to tip out a train en route.

The door warble is a joke as is the autoclose doors

Was at liverpool street on one of these for 9 minutes someone gets on door warbles door closes someone comes and presses the button more door warble.

I even moved to near the front and could still hear multiple door openings and closing it's a joke it's so loud don't see the need for it.

Fair enough, my mistake.

Yes, I agree about the door sounders. I don't have a problem with automatically closing doors but the excess noise is infuriating! I understand why there needs to be a sound played when the doors are first released at a station and I also understand why one has to play any time the doors close. That said, I think the duration is excessive and I don't feel it's necessary to play a sound to denote when doors already released are opened. I don't recall that being a necessary part of the DDA spec? Perhaps just play the sound once rather than six times when that happens. Oh, and drop the volume a bit!

I presume that like the class 700s, the 345s have weight sensors in the suspension so that they have a measure of how well loaded cars are, so maybe they should adjust the PA/warning signal system volume to compensate for the absorption of noise in a full car compared with the hard surfaces of a near empty one.

Well blind people are disabled aren't they? AND YOU HAVE TO BE LOUD WITH DISABLED PEOPLE IN CASE THEY DON'T UNDERSTAND, DON'T YOU?!

VTEC's Mark 4's are ridiculous in this respect too, with excessive volume and duration of door opening sound. Blind people aren't silly, they recognise the click of a door release, but their world is being overrun with stupid electronic sounds to 'denote' something happening.

Well they already know, because the something happening has a sound it makes already which 'denotes' it happening!
