Unfortunately, Maps has stopped.
Can anyone tell me what the really odd noise the Hunslet built class 323's make when they pull away?? It really is a queer noise. Sorta like "doy-doy-doy-doy-doy-doy-doy-doy"
The Desiro's do it as well, but it's a bit different.
If no-one knows, great, it'll continue to baffle me, but if you know, please shed some light on it!!
I'm just about to start route learning on the 350's as a guard with LM, and the noise will continue to baffle me!!!!

Its the traction motors.

The 444/450s have had the noise changed quite a few times when the software has been altered (the first altered one I drove I actually rang it in as faulty ).

Smooth :D

Please don't harm me when I say this but I really enjoy AC traction music, perhaps even more so than DC! Everyone loves a bit o' the old thrash in any case though :P

I do like the noise of the 323s as its so different (is there something similar on the underground?), the 444/450s noise is just everyday to me.

1996TS, shares traction package with the infamous Networker... German trains are cool, no diss - I swear Desiros are quieter than Electrostars :P

323s are unique for sure!

The noice from the traction motors when they pull away is one reason why I like the class 323's

Come on though, Alstom Onyx traction controllers sound boring compared with Siemens or Hunslet's kit...

1995TS is the 'boring' Onyx IIRC. After all, I've been nurtured to appreciate the exquisite delights of a Class 365 Networker Express from a tender young age, and if you dare call that boring... Let's just say it won't end well :D

This article may help; http://www.railway-technical.com/tract-02.shtml#GTO

I think the noise comes about due to the current to the motor being quickly turned on and off at differing rates, i.e pulse width modulation.

This brings to mind a recording I made, if anyone enjoys the sound:

I love GTO traction noises, I have some of the 96TS as well, but I want to get some networkers before they are all turned into that horrible monotonal hitachi motor.

That's a a brilliant recording love the sound of the 323's.

Depends on your point of view, the modulation and control method on the Onyx system is much more intresting than the single source exciter and GTO systems on the 323, Networker and 96TS, although the noise on the latter is much more intresting.

The thing is, Power Electronics moved on very quickly, after PWM control came in, the actual semiconductors moved on to include GTO and working with a static convertor, and then what we have now with full wave inversion on three phases, made possible by the joys of MOSFETs coming into common usage to be able to form up IGBT sets...

It is due to the motor controllers but the only motor control out there that uses PWM to actually DRIVE the motor (before anyone harps on about CTBCs and control systems using "PWM" as my trainer said it, that isn't actually PWM). The only LUL stock to use PWM in it's raw form is the 1992TS on the Central Line. An example from Network Rail tracks includes stock such as the Class 321 units, or any of the later DC motored stock.

GTO Systems only use PWM as part of the exciter and do not form an integral part of the system's control, as this can be done without any actual control to form the excitation source for the AC signal.

Modern systems do use PWM (in a very clever way that I won't go into today) to make 'fake' AC for the motors, without going into how AC motors work vs. DC motors that I don't think would be appreciated, I can't really explain much more than that.

I believe certain motor frequencies are notched out on the 323s to avoid interfering with signalling. I remember that being a problem with Eurostars during testing on DC...

I did once get see full explanation on uk.railway when someone asked about the Austrian Taurus....

It is a very distinct noice, both on starting up and drawing to a halt, and one of the first things I noticed when I first used the 323s in the late 1990s.
Agreed that this is probably as destinguishable as the very different whine made by the 365s.

We are safe, I recall someone mentioning on my ol' 365 C6X overhaul thread that it isn't deemed viable to retrofit Hitachi traction equipment to GEC-motored examples; i.e. all Networkers which haven't been done, and 1996TS.

The Brush Motors were kept on the BREL Networkers. It was the inverters that were changed as the Brush ones were more troublesome then the GEC Alstom ones fitted to the Metro Cammell units. Brush don't have a current traction system so bought and fitted the Hitatchi kit. Chances are if there is an upgrade to the 365s and 465/2s it will be with the current Alstom Onyx kit (again will be Mototone as IGBT traction is more efficient then the older GTO kit fitted to Networkers)

Sorry to comment on an old thread, but can I just say that I have the pleasure to use one of these beauties twice a day everyday :) Except when Northern were refreshing them and kept sending 142s. The noise they make really does not compare... at all. To anything else. It's amazing. AC Motors ftw!

LM treated theirs better than ours though :( Give them new exterior door controls and PIS and I'd say they were perfect!

323s sound awesome, but nothing like 350s, I don't really get that comparison.

The traction motor sound on 350s remind me of the 1952 War of the Worlds movie.

I think i will post some pictures of spectrograms of audio I have recorded of electric trains, perhaps they will reveal something about the type of motors?
