I understand that its expensive repainting trains, but surely senior management at scotrail would rather have all their trains branded in their saltire livery rather than in old carmine colors as those old spt colors are not true representation of the scotrail the old SPT do not represent the identify of the scotrail brand

...

what I am saying is that old SPT units are not representative of the scotrail franchise as they are not in saltire colours and the fact remains that if scotrail have these old spt units then why not hurry things along

I'm sure Scotrail would prefer all the units to be in the same livery, and for everything to have the same branding. But there's only so much money, and you can't take a unit out of traffic for a lick of paint when you already have a shortage. Scotrail are running a business. They can't afford to take all the units out of traffic and just paint them blue, regardless of when the last repaint was. Repainting a train isn't like painting your bedroom walls. It takes a lot of time and a lot of money. The decision's been taken for the right reasons to do the refresh as and when needed (aside from a handful of launch units).

I think if you polled passengers about what they want from the railways, the top responses would be punctuality, reliability, comfort, getting a seat... I don't think all that many would want a consistent colour of train. A strong brand is good, but Scotrail (in its various guises) has been doing well for the past decade. We've had SPT livery and branding for quite a long time (even going back to the orange trains), and it never harmed anyone. It's gone now, but I don't think people are getting angry about some stations and most trains still being in those colours. It's not causing anyone any confusion, and it isn't harming the railways.

I have ride the 318 many times and see that they are out of date they need a repaint/overhaul

I've already said the 318s have just had a refurb. In fact, they've been amongst the most recent EMUs to see a refurbishment in Scotland. There is no need whatsoever to send them back in. If you continue to make this point, can you perhaps give some specific examples as to what needs improved?

It is laughable to suggest that a train refurbished about five years ago is out of date and needs overhauled.

The fact remains scotrail needs to hurry up and ... update their fleet as well

Err... I think they've got a pretty modern fleet! The 314s are old, there's no denying that, and they really should have been refurbished a long time ago. Other than that, the rest of the fleet is no older than 25 years old, there's been two new fleets of EMUs and one new fleet of DMUs since privatisation ... nothing really needs updating. The refurbs are being done to schedule; nothing's desperately needing redone, and the delay of a few months isn't anything to get yourself too worked up over.

As I said before, can you please take a trip to the North of England. You might actually realise just how lucky you are to be in the ex-SPT area. Some trains in England were still running around in Regional Railways livery in 2008, some fifteen years post-privatisation!

its costs money to repaint the trains

I don't see why its so hard for them to not repaint the trains. I mean just put the spt fleet into scotrail brand

for me i would rather see the back of old spt trains and get rid of the old colours and just paint them

If its money is the problem then they could just repaint into new saltire colours

This is why scotrail are taking long to rebrand their trains

a delay in training drivers for the 380 and delay into contractors plus taking into account the fact that the delivery of 380 were delayed coupled together with bad weather made refurbished program put back

Scotrail need to have a look at their current fleet and say to them selves "look we have old spt fleet and would rather put more work into them regardless of recent refurbishment on their fleet and put more investment into hiring more contractors to repaint the trains into saltire look in order for them to represent the brand more thus customers can easily identify scotrail rather than SPT"

If I were in charge I would put the order in to repaint the entire fleet all at once, once the new look of the brand was released back in 2008 and then go ahead and hire more contractors to give the spt fleet and new lick of paint into saltire look then once all SPT trains are in saltire look I would then go ahead and repaint the larger fleet of 170's then once thats done find a way to return my investment.

all in all, scotrail should have more brand awareness on their trains

Does anybody else feel that we’re going round in circles here?

The majority of passengers don’t care what colour their train is. Their top priority is that a train turns up at all, which isn’t going to happen if a number of units are out of service for repainting, as there isn’t enough slack in the fleet to allow this to happen. Taking that many units out of service just isn’t an option.

Scotrail are quite rightly focusing on running a railway and not wasting unnecessary sums of money repainting trains that don’t really need it just for the sake of a “brand image”.

On another note, it may have been reported in this thread previously, but as of April 22nd the centre carriage of the 320 currently undergoing refurbishment was sat in the works yard at Wabtec Doncaster, kitted out in Saltire blue livery but still semi-masked out, as a bit of a progress report.

at least some progress with the 320 , any one at don caster take photos of the centre carriage with saltire colors would like to see it

if not might head down there myself locate the unit and and have look at it my self

I think customers although might be reluctant to have their trains on time but would appreciate it more if the trains were repainted

I don;t think it is a waste of money for scotrail to be painting their trains but more of a return in investment for them and for customer I think brand identity is the upmost importance for them as well as the company

I think its worth spending both the money and time painting trains as quicker they repaint the trains the sooner they can spend the money on more worthwhile ventures such stations repaints into scotrail brand or infrastructure investment

all this is taking up time and its time that scotrail can't afford to waste which could be put to good use to painting trains

painting trains is not a waste of money but rather than a good return on investment and that is something scotrail see

Priorities tend to be :
Operates and is punctual
Cleanliness

It could be argued that the livery forms part of the cleanliness, and this refurbishment includes new seating covers so forms part of the livery
Many of the previous SPT liveries are now worn out and need replacing
15 years for seat covers is excessive

yet again you dont seem able to grasp reality...
units are needed to operate timetables services... so that passengers will pay to travel.

If units are shipped off to springburn, kilmarnock, doncaster or wherever else for repaint.. then they (ScotRail) either cant run their full timetable... or they have to run shorter train formations than booked... meaning fewer passengers can be carried on each service.

IF ScotRail decided to have a rapid repaint program... it would be a wast of money since (as has been said several times already) the paintjobs on the class 314, and 318 for example are still fairly recent... and for the most part in good enough condition to be left as they are for another few years.

ScotRail will have a set budget for things like repaints each year... and so will only repaint units as and when they NEED repainted... or when it fits in with works attention and/or heavy reurbishment/overhaul like the class 320s as agreed with whichever ROSCO owns the class.

Would ScotRail/Transport Scotland LIKE their brand widely spread if money wasnt an object... quite probably yes..
but since there is a limited budget... the units will be repainted when they NEED repainted... not because some enthusiast thinks that they should be repainted.

In the meantime stations are being repainted and getting new signs, as well as getting smartended up. Since station repaints/refurbishments can be done without inconveniencing the PAYING passenger too much...

that is true however I think passengers would appreciate it if fewer trains were running or out of service to be repainted armed with the knowledge that in the long run that the trains will be back and be better and more improved better than before

If scotrail took out all the trains to be repainted etc and operated with a limited time table then I would not mind safe with the knowledge that we are getting newer/refurbished units in order to improve the operation

Scotrail could do that which although putting inconvenience to passengers in the short run however in the long run would be better experience for customers

I don't see that the 318 or 320's are recent even though they have been done in the last 5 years I'd rather see those units repainted anyway in order to keep up with the brand logo

If a unit has been done recently and the company was rebranded then therefore those units would need to go back into production and repainted in order to represent the rail company

If scotrail have a limited budget then the money would be well spent on painting the trains

I for one would rather have the trains be repainted rather than interior refurbishment

what about in order to save money, instead of spending money on interior refurbishment they could spend all their money on painting the trains in order for the units to represent the scotrail franchise

I would rather see more units in scotrail livery than interior work

The old spt colors look out of date when they arrive at a scotrail station that has the scotrail saltire logo therefore get it repaint

All you do is pay the contractors to repaint the trains and pay for equipment and what ever expenses needed for other work

Overall scotrail needs to have their units repainted regardless of cash/money etc just do it already

I think First ScotRail preferred the money they got from the franchise extension.

Ha! How could I forget that "all above board" deal!
Tmckinnin, I suggest you write to either First ScotRail, or TS regarding your displeasure, as this discussion is becoming very circular indeed.

If you want to pay, go ahead. Unfortunately, businesses do have the slight inconvenience of having to balance their books. Nothing can be done regardless of the finances.

if its all down to money then find more investments in order to continue with the repaint program

transport scotland could put more money into scotrail in order for them to speed up with the refurb program or use the extra cash generated from customer shareholders etc to be spent on repainting trains

what about investment from first surely they could invest in their shares and the profits generated from shares could be used to repaint the trains

it shouldn't be down to the fact that when a train necessary needs to be repaint on terms of condition of unit then go ahead and refurb

it should be on the terms of when the company has a rebrand of its logo or brand therefore its brand/logo should be spread across its products/services
it has already done that with leaflets/cards/websites etc then spread to the trains although some not all all already have that but more needs to be done

Again it shouldn't be depending on if the train needs to attention then get a repaint

it should be a automatic process as scotrail has rebrand into saltire therefore management should automatically rebrand all trains regardless of attention/external factors/recent repaint/

units should be repainted when ever the company gets rebranded this is 2011 for goodness sake and heard that it won't until 2013/2014 till all units gets refurbished I mean by that time most trains would be far in advance that makes scotrail just being rebranded across station and units and other trains are already advance in other places

overall if scotrail want to remain leader as scotland railways then hurry up and repaint their units in their brand logo

 look at it this way ...

FACT there is not enough surplus in the ScotRail fleet to allow extra units to be sent away for repainting

FACT there are no surplus EMU or DMU vehicles available in the UK for hire to cover for extra FSR units to be sent for repainting

FACT paying passengers already pay more than they would like, and reducing the amount of available seats and/or standing space would not be well liked or accepted

FACT the non enthusiast traveling public dont care what colour a train is painted so long as it turns up, and get them to their destination on time

FACT any Budget that FSR/ScotRail have is to cover repaints, leasing fees, maintenance, Refurbishments (inc. repaints where needed) at times and to specifications as agreed with the ROSCOs, advertising, salaries etc... so all the funds in the budget are already allocated

FACT as has already been stated... the ScotRail fleet is considerably more modern and in better condition than Rail fleets elsewhere in britain (outside of london/South East)

FACT as has also been stated... there are unit fleets in england that were not repainted untill the last few years that retained BR sector liveries upto 15 years after being painted

FACT the majority of the ScotRail fleet has been painted atleast once since privitisation, with some units/fleets having been painted more than once

once again... if your not happy (as i have said and as other have said above) write to FSR/ScotRail and Transport Scotland to let them know your not happy with their financially sensible choice to only paint units when needed and would rather that they waste money

I get what you mean but wait there is a solution to use alternative fleet when the current fleet are away being repainted

Use the bigger fleet of scotrail trains i.e use the 170 or 380's or 322 or other scotrail fleet trains when the old spt are out to be repainted/refurb etc

surely they could go ahead and use scotrail fleet of trains as an alternative while the other fleet of trains are being repainted only for a temporary basis

even though the general public don;t care what color of train they use as long they get from A to B
I care what color of train as from a business sense, if I were a company, I'll say this again, the brand is important and the logo/look of the company needs to reflect on the product/service of that business so

If i were scotrail I wouldn't care if i spend/waste money on painting trains

on that note if its a cost to paint trains then use recycled paint if such exists or purchase a cheaper alternative to the paint that does the same job but at a cheaper price or cut labour costs and hire cheaper painters or hire sub contractors to paint the trains

overall scotrail should put their trains out of service in order to repaint the trains and use their more advance fleet of 380/170 etc until the other fleet are ready for use again

wasting money on painting trains is not a problem for scotrail as they can recuperate their costs from tickets sales, ad revenue/shares/stocks etc

I'm probably wasting my time here, but... you do realise that all of these units currently work other services, don't you? They can't just send them across to Glasgow! And there are other things to consider like having train crew that can actually operate the rolling stock.

If i were scotrail I wouldn't care if i spend/waste money on painting trains

Wasting money is a problem. Repainting trains won't generate additional revenue.

Anyway, I've said enough as I suspect others have. If you want to keep banging on about this, feel free, but it won't change anything.

READ what has been typed above...
There are no spare units available in the ScotRail fleet to cover for extra units to be sent for painting... there are also no spare (mainline) EMUs or DMUs available anywhere in the uk that can be used (even if they are cleared to operate over X, Y and Z lines/routes) to cover for extra units being sent for repaint

paint work, body work etc has to be repaired/repainted/replaced to high standards set by the ROSCO and by the relevant authorities... certain products cant be used... and the ROSCOs will require to have work done by approved contractors and from approved suppliers

Even if cheaper paint (if any cheaper paint is allowed to be used for rail aplications) could be and was used... it would mean paying for the paint now, and the workers time to paint the unit... and then the unit would need repainted a lot sooner than it would if it had had a proper repaint... meaning double the cost or higher in the long run.

To the member arguing for a sudden repaint- Your argument is a joke and the sentence structure is often hazy with the points being ill conceived. You obviously have little grasp of practicalities.

so it would be a costly business to repaint all the trains then pay for cheaper sub contractors to rebrand the trains like hire cheap labour or labour that will paint the trains for nothing if at all something

regrading train operation for repaint here is another solution

repaint the entire fleet during the cold and dark winter months or even repaint all the train during the night i.e after midnight take all the train out of service put them up for repaint as the train are not in service after midnight anyway they are lying in the depot doing nothing while they could be doing something useful

or during the winter months when snow causes problems anyway have the trains out of service and use that time to repaint

so either repaint all the trains during the small hours of the night i.e. after midnight repaint them as they are not in service anyway

or repaint them during the winter months as snow prevents any rail operation so have the trains during the nights in their hangers and repaint them

and for the painters well hire guys that will paint the trains during the night

that would work scotrail could repaint the entire fleet after midnight when trains are not in service thus speeding up the refurb program

when repainting the trains during the night they could do a few trains per night thus speeding up the process

ok, once again READ what has been typed before.. and read this..

to paint a train would require more than 5 or 6 hours... not to mention the rubbing down the paint work, fitting in any dents, treating surface areas that are affected with rust/corrosion, and masking the windows, buttons etc.

trains tend to get repairs, servicing, exams, interior and exterior cleaning etc done at night and there is no way a good paint job would be dry before the unit would be required to leave the depot the following morning...

Also remember that any one who paints the trains will have to be an approved supplier/contractor... time of day or night probably wouldnt affect the actual painting, but it would affect the cost for these workers since working at night would cost more

you cant withdraw trains in the winter any more than you can withdraw them during the summer... there is still a timetable to run, and if the trains dont run ScotRail would end up with fines...

painting conditions.. to get a good lasting paint finish any vehicle (well i know its this way for cars, buses and trucks and assume the same for Rail vehicles) will be required to be repainted in a warm, dry dust free environment... which frankly, most depots dont have... the fact that the two 334s have turned out as well as they have is lucky... but the full units were not being painted, only the cab ends, and iirc window frames. the rest was vinyl wrapped

and before you jump to the "vinyl them all" idea... the units still require considerable time to prepare them to be wrapped, and certain conditions. plus a full vinyl livery would still be costly, and wouldnt last anywhere near as long as a proper paint job.

I really don’t think you grasp the magnitude of what you are suggesting here:

Do you realise that repainting just a single train takes about a week, AT LEAST? You couldn’t just do it overnight. Admittedly re-vinyling takes less time, but I think that even the newer vinyl liveries require a base coat of paint to protect the bodywork from corrosion.

Suggesting waiting for a particularly heavy snowfall to then take the opportunity to repaint the trains is bordering on insanity. So just have hundreds of gallons of paint lying around the place for weeks waiting on the off chance that it snows heavily enough to restrict the train service??? You’ve also failed to consider that there are a limited number of paint shops available to repaint trains: You can’t just repaint a train wherever it happens to be standing at the time. And how do you get the trains to the paint shop if half the lines are blocked by snow?

And it’s not only blockage of lines by snow that restricts the train services during times of extreme adverse weather conditions: Quite often, it’s the lack of working trains available that causes services to be cancelled. At such times the depots will be working flat out to keep as many trains in service as possible and certainly not taking them out of service when as many working trains as can be made available are needed.

Cheap labour? A volunteer workforce? Yes, let’s repaint the trains now on the cheap, and give it about a year until it all has to be done again because of the poor quality job that was done. That’ll really save money.

EDIT: Basically what cj_1985 said

so that idea may not work in the long run however repainting the trains during the night would still work

just work on one train per night per week so after 1 week another train would go in and etc then keep on the rolling stock to repaint the trains

in terms of vinyl surly a cheaper alternative can be done around that yet still having a high quality standard

in term of labour, find contractors that offer a cheaper price that will do the job on the cheap

but during the harsh winters when snow prevents any service when those trains are not in service they could be repainted

basically just do the work during the night and during the winters may be repaint more trains when the trains are not in service and use a limited stock due to heavy snow

when heavy snow and the UK is at a stand still and the country cannot cope and the transport network is paralyzed then surely during that time could be spent wisely repainting the trains when they are not in service and use the trains that are already in saltire colors like the 380 or 334 etc and use them instead when they are in service

you can do all this on the cheap hire out contractors that offer a cheap price that will still the work up to a standard then use cheaper paints/vinyls etc that still make the work look good quality and find cheaper suppliers and labour

So you'd still be sending a partially rubbed down unit out in service?

Where's the pics of the 334s? For someone who's so concerned about corporate image, I suggest you look.

And I would really like it if you could either stop posting crap, or jsut leave these forums and never return....

This is what happens when you try and relivery a 334 by only doing work when it's not required for passenger services:

Tmckinnin, you clearly haven’t absorbed all of what has been said above: You can’t repaint a train on a piecemeal basis. You need a dry, dust free environment at a fairly constant temperature for a start. And then you'd have piebald trains running around in a semi-painted or rubbed-down state: Considerably worse for Scotrails’ image than a tidy SPTE liveried train.

During the worst adverse weather conditions, the operators don’t always have a choice of which trains are fit to run. And it seems to be the case that the older ones fair much better than the new ones in extreme wintery weather (Note the 156s ruling the roost at Scotrail during last winters’ exceptional snowfall).

Ever heard of the concept of “You pay for quality/You get what you pay for?”

when heavy snow and the UK is at a stand still and the country cannot cope and the transport network is paralyzed then surely during that time could be spent wisely repainting the trains when they are not in service and use the trains that are already in saltire colors like the 380 or 334 etc and use them instead when they are in service

you can do all this on the cheap hire out contractors that offer a cheap price that will still the work up to a standard then use cheaper paints/vinyls etc that still make the work look good quality and find cheaper suppliers and labour

humour me this.... how old are you "tmckinnin" .. because the way you go on and on and on and on about the same thing despite having been told why it isnt happening, and frankly your obsession with train livery suggests me to me that your not old enough or mature enough to understand the reality of the situation...

i could be wrong, but iv noticed an increase of "new" members on this and other forums posting requests/demands about when X loco or Y Fleet will be repainted or renumbered...and your 15 posts , all in this thread, suggests to me that your one of these people

The paranoid side of me is hoping that people don't think I'm affiliated with tmckinnin, as I'm a "new" member, despite joining nearly 18 months ago... Hehe, but yeah, I personally think Scotrail are doing a good job. Despite being an enthusiast, the colour of the train really does not affect my travel plans or my opinions of the TOC, as long as the train turns up - whether on time or not - I really don't mind if it's red, blue, orange and gold.

i understand the logistics behind this but overall the speed in which scotrail are painting their units is slow since 2008 only about a few spt trains have been repainted

and also why is the 320 and 334s and the last few units to be repainted and why are the 150 units etc were the first to be repainted

also trains operation should be on a continuing basis in order to update the brand on their trains

That's OK, like I said, purely paranoia, I blame the fact that I have an English exam tomorrow and instead of revising I am focusing all my brain power onto thoughts of railways and trains :)
